Dear Forum Members and Fellow Americans,
Happy Memorial Day to you, your family, and all those you know and love. I know many of you have served your nation, or had family members who have. Regardless, we are a proud nation of people who have enjoyed a unique Constitution and Freedom bought with the blood and sacrifice of sons and daughters throughout our history that has ensured a way of life that is the envy of others around the world. May we and our future generations forever hold strong the beliefs, standards, and principles under God and Country that have made this nation great among many. However we celebrate this weekend, let us not fail to recognize the brave and selfless individuals who bought our freedoms with their very lives. Although we may disagree and argue on issues, let us never forget we are Americans, and what that means. God Bless each and every American, past, present, and future, as well as each and every one of you and those you love. Yours under the Flag and the Constitution……………..Norm

Thank you chilipepper. I know from this post and others, your heart is in the right place with your statement.

However, let us not forget why this day is a National holiday. It is to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for others so that those others may continue on in liberty.

It is a solemn day, not necessarily a happy one.

Here's to all those brave warriors who didn't get to keep on, so that we all may.

I just ran my US Flag up the flag pole out front. I put it up at 6:00 MDT this morning. I'll take it down this evening at sundown.

One thing you remember as a Chief, are the E-6's that work with you and later advance to Chief hopefully based on your mentoring. BMCS Terrell Horne was my BM1 on my last Cutter, and made Chief right after he transferred to a small Cutter (USCGC Halibut) as the XPO. In the Coast Guard, we recognize the importance of enlisted experience, and we have many units that are either run completely by enlisted personnel or, as in the small Cutter have a LT as the CO and a Chief as the XPO (Executive Petty Officer, or enlisted XO).

I held that position as the XPO of Station Buffalo (top of the falls), and know the mentality and maturity required of that position, so was very happy when Terrell got his XPO job based partly on my recommendation. Since there are very few Coast Guard assets in theater during a war (though we do still have people serving in the Persian Gulf) it is rare that one of us is killed in the line of duty. The fact that one of those was my close friend, confidant and port-call drinking buddy really strikes close to home.

I would appreciate if you would all read the attached article, and remember him today, and say a prayer for his wife and kids.

Wolf, you're absolutely correct, one and all please forgive my ill considered title of "Happy" Memorial Day. I only intended honor and respect for those who've fallen defending our country and freedoms.

That is NOT what Memorial Day is all about.
Late to the party again. Have been traveling.

Besides not representing what Memorial day is about, I didn't get that lump in my throat, or profound feeling I get from a well-rounded, patriotic video.

I'm blaming the narration. I have nothing against women narrating videos, but this one lacked the power, emotion, and solemn edge associated with such videos. It lacked that emotional "hook", in broadcast lingo. YMMV

I don't really care about the narration or power, etc. Memorial Day isn't about politics. It's about honoring those who've made the ultimate sacrifice in military service for this country.
