Handgun safe/storage

We recently got word from our son and his wife that they are expecting their 1st child in Feb. '15. Since we are going to help them by babysitting, we will need to do things around the house to child proof it for safety. First thing on the list is a handgun safe. There are quite a few out there. I am concerned of the ones that are keyed (fumbling or losing them) and battery operated (dead battery when you need it most). What would you recommend that has worked for you (type of lock and brand).
Thanks in advance

What you could do is have the safe in your room with all your firearms in it besides a accessible sidearm that only you and your wife know where it is for emergencies.

What you want is a gun safe with a simplex lock. Google "simplex gun safe" and you will find multiple options. Just one example:

I have several GunVault MiniVault/MultiVault Deluxe with an electronic button lock that is backed up with a mechanical key lock. They have an external power supply and use a 9V battery as a backup. They also have a motion sensor/alarm (in case someone is trying to remove the vault from its drilled down position). I have had zero issues with them.

Look for the ones that use the all mechanical pushbutton lock. This one has an additional feature (optional) in that it will let you in as a backup key and lock you out as it disables the pushbutton lock when you want to. Both features are a first on a mechanical handgun safe. It also presents your holstered gun to you.
