H&R ejector

I have an older H&R 20 ga. single shot. Have a problem with the ejector. Sometimes the ejector doesn't work & the shell has to be pulled out by hand. When it works, ( most of the time ), it throws the shell across the room.
Every thing looks good to me, so I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this.
I have only fired slugs in it, so I'm wondering if it could be the shells.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

It's usually the shells. Sometimes the brass cases swells a little too much after firing and the ejector isn't strong enough to extract the shell casing. I normally saw this happen with the "cheap" shells (ie. silver-color casing). Hope this helps.

Thanks, the range I go to will only let you shoot slugs. So I have nothing to compare.
Will take it & some different ammo when I go to the cabin. Hopefully it will work better
with shot shells.
