Gun safes

We just had a small boy in my community die due to an accidental self inflicted gunshot wound from a gun that was left out and within reach of him. This is something that should never have happened. Unfortunately it happens all too often. It doesn't take me 15 seconds to lock my gun up after carrying it at the end of the day. I couldn't imagine something happening to my kids because I didn't take that small amount of time to safely secure it. Gun safes and trigger locks are an extremely small investment to ensure our kids safety and well being. Some areas even offer free trigger locks to help. Our prayers are with the family during this time. With the proper precautions taken, this is something that could be prevented from ever happening again.

I don't have gun safe but I use the same cabinet my dad (and likely his dad) used to keep the same guns he (and for sure his dad) used out of the hands of the kids.

I hate to see these stories too, especially with all the quick access options available today.

I have 4 safes. Biggie for the long arms (bolted to slab and studs), 2 for ammo, and 1 for my wife's and my own sidearm. Ammo safes stay locked all the time (mags ready to go). We have no kids/grandkids over but once a year, and everything is locked-up when they are here. Store the ammo safes and sidearm safe in different locations.

Don't carry when they are over, either.

Thoughts and prayers go to the family. This is especially grievous as it was preventable. There is no excuse for it, and the parents will be reminded every day how deadly negligence may be.

I don't have kids, and my wife is an excellent shot and knows/understands the safety requisites for handling a firearm. I have to say, I was loose about locking my firearms up, because no one in my household would be stupid enough to handle them in an unsafe manner.

Then almost two years ago, my house was broken into and two pistols were stolen. I felt really stupid.

Now, firearms are either on my person or locked up. I have a large gun safe for my long barreled firearms and a small one bolted to the floor upstairs for the pistols.

For those with children, I would recommend those quick open, biometric safes to have quick access to your firearm in case something goes "bump" in the night.

We have a large Liberty safe. Normally just the wife and I, so we only use it to secure things when we are not home. We do however lock it when the grandkids or any other kids are over. I think we need to be responsible to both keep firearms out of the hands of kids and of criminals, hence secure them when they are not under our direct control.

Only safe I have is a metal lockbox I bolted to the side of the trunk in my car for when I pick the kids up.from school.
