Gun rights coalition proclaims Jan. 19 as ‘Gun Appreciation Day’
A broad coalition of gun rights and conservative groups, including the Bellevue-based Link Removedand Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, has proclaimed Jan. 19 as a national “Link Removed.”
They are urging Americans across the country to “show their support for gun ownership” by flocking to gun shops, shooting ranges and weekend gun shows – such as the one scheduled that weekend by the Washington Arms Collectors at the Puyallup Fairgrounds.
The story raced around the world Monday morning, and was picked up by the Link Removed.
In a press release, Gun Appreciation Day Chairman Larry Ward, said the effort will “send a message to Washington” two days before President Obama’s inauguration as a means of protest against gun control policies now being put forth. Although the official inauguration date is Jan. 20, the swearing-in ceremony has been moved to Monday, Jan. 21.
“The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people,” said Ward, president of Political Media, Inc. “If the American people don’t fight back now, Obama will do the Second Amendment what he has already done to the First with Obamacare – gut it without a moment’s thought to our basic constitutional rights.”
The organization has launched a website that offers political news and talking points for gun rights activists, including the recent revelation that more people die from hammer attacks each year than rifles.
SAF Executive Vice President Alan Gottlieb, who also chairs CCRKBA, criticized the notion of gun bans.
“We need to ban politicians who assault our rights not firearms that are used thousands of times a day to protect lives and property from criminal attack,” he said.
Gun Appreciation Day might be the counter-balance to an idea posed by author Dave Marcus writing at the Huffington Post. He wants gun prohibitionists to “Show up in Washington on Inauguration Day, Jan. 21, with signs and banners. Dress your children in black. Demand three changes: Extensive background checks for every gun buyer; a 90-day cooling off period for all gun purchases; and a ban on handguns, semi-automatic weapons and large-supply magazines.”
Remarkably, according to Link Removed, Ladd Everitt, spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, supports the plan.
The Link Removed, Atlantic Wire and Business Insider are also carrying stories about the event.
