U.S. gun ownership down almost across the board, survey says | KDVR.com ? Denver news & weather

DENVER — The gun ownership rate of the United States has dropped significantly during the past 40 years, a new national survey shows.

The household gun ownership rate has fallen from an average of 50 percent in the 1970s to 49 percent in the 1980s, 43 percent in the 1990s and 35 percent in the 2000s, according to the General Social Survey.

Perhaps most surprisingly, gun ownership is down across many regions and demographics. It has declined in urban and rural areas, among households with and without children, among religious people and non-religious people. It has even declined in the South and Mountain West states, areas that had previously been thought of as strongholds of gun ownership.

Gun ownership in both the South and the mountain region dropped to less than 40 percent in the past 10 yearse, down from 65 percent in the 1970s. The Northeast, where the household ownership rate is lowest, changed the least, at 22 percent this decade, compared with 29 percent in the 1970s.

While household ownership of guns among elderly Americans remained virtually unchanged from the 1970s at about 43 percent, ownership among Americans under the age of 30 fell to 23 percent this decade from 47 percent in the 1970s. The survey showed a similar decline for Americans ages 30 to 44.

The survey also shows a steep drop in gun ownership among Democrats and independents, and a very slight decline among Republicans. But the new data suggest a reversal among Republicans, with 51 percent since 2008 saying they have a gun in their home, up from 47 percent in surveys taken from 2000 through 2006. This leaves the Republican rate a bit below where it was in the 1970s, while ownership for Democrats is nearly half of what it was then.

Maybe ownership is down that much, or maybe admitting to survey takers that one owns guns is down that much.

The increase in population may have something to do with the statistics, assuming they are correct. Especially when the ownership amoug older people remains about the same and younger, government school indoctrinated people has fallen. Ownership in my house has gone up significantly since 2008. :)

Nor do I. It is a liberal spin to lend us an idea that we are soon going to be alone. It is as the previous poster said, "liberal bs."

Im guessing that most gun owners will not admit to a stranger doing a survey that they own guns. Liberals have criminalized gun owners, so why go around blabbing that you own guns?

Note that Republican counts have stayed the same percentage or risen. Dems have dropped as there are more illegals and hypocrites added to that group over the past 30 years. Many Dems have been caught saying they are anti-gun while owning them.

The problems the republican party has are the exact same problems the NRA has. It's members are too old, too white, too male and too southern. When the republicans and the NRA begin to appeal to the actual majorities, and the soon to be actual majorities in this nation, they will both begin to reverse a downward spiral that is directly tied to the death rate of old, white, southern men. Hence we now have more assault rifles, more pink assault rifles and Ann Romney. But, until both the NRA and the republicans appeal to the soon to be majority in this nation, young Hispanics, their fates are sealed.

The coming collapse of our system will surely increase the number of gun owners, out of necessity. After a crunch of our economic system, many people will shift their thinking to a more Constitutional line... they'll understand the dangers of big, bloated gov't. Those that don't or won't, won't be around for long in a world like what's coming our way.

Probably a real accurate survey. knock knock. "Can I help you?" "We were wondering if you own any guns?" stunned homeowner answers "Um no I don't and go away." Of course any sane person would say no. The percentage that said yes probably answered the door with one in hand.

The rate of household gun ownership is down. That isn't the same as the number of guns owned.

For example, if a husband owned a gun, then his wife buys one, then both buy two more, they haven't changed the rate of household gun ownership. They represent only one household, albeit two individuals.

Lets see... Since Obama-Lama-ding-dong took office, 64.5 million guns have been sold.
Yeah, I don't think those poll numbers are even remotely close to actual numbers...

Haha this reminds me of a conversation I was having the other day. I was talking about hunting with a buddy and this liberal serial eavesdropper I know jumps in and goes "Now Nathan, you don't own any guns?" and she made that OMG gasping face with her hand across her chest, so I was like "God no! They're dangerous!" The idiot believed me. I also told her that I spear hunted and she bought it.

I think everybody is like, nope, no guns here heh heh heh when they respond to those polls.

NICS checks are shattering records left and right and gunownership is down? Yeah, right. Statistics can be juggled to "prove" anything.
