Hmmm... 165 yards in a trailer park with a handgun and connected 4 times? Thompson Contender with 7mm-08 maybe? And a scope. Or perhaps a .45 ACP that drops what, 3 feet or so at 150 yards? I couldn't find a trajectory chart that went past 100 yards for rounds like 9mm, .40 S&W, etc. AND I'm not saying it didn't happen. I'm just impressed that a handgun shooter who is actively being shot at could connect 4 times in a row at a 165 yards (495 feet) on a likely not stationary target. That said, I'm glad the bad guy got what he deserved and the police officer is OK.

Other writings of this story say the police estimated it was 150 feet, not yards, and he was shooting a .357 magnum. Roughly 50 yards.

Explain this to me....

Sgt. Steven Means of the Early Police Department came rolling onto the scene, but he had barely gotten out of his car before Conner began opening fire on the officer. Means took cover behind his police car and returned fire with an AR-15, but Conner maintained cover behind a tree. Eyewitnesses report that this positioning gave Conner the upper hand over the out-gunned police officer.

I didn't see a mention of what firearm Conner had but how the heck can a cop with an AR be "out gunned"? Pinned down and unable to return fire possibly, but then again the cop was right next to his patrol car and could have used it to move his position.

Good shot by the old coger with the handgun.

I was thinking the same thing Walt. Unless the bad guy had a M60 or a .50 BMG I would not consider myself outgunned. I also find it funny that the media always refers to us as gun owners as if we are part of some fringe cult group like Heaven Gate worshipers. I guess it follows the same liberal logic that anyone with handgun becomes an assault rifle waving lunatic.

Sure you did, the article mentions Connor as having an AR 15, also. Interesting that an old fart with a .357 revolver is the catalyst to end the assault. Good on ya!

That sounds about right....
I can consistently hit a medium sized round steel plinker target at 100 yards away with my colt king cobra 357 magnum (6 inch barrel) two hand supported. I really doubt that I could be very consistent with my colt further than that distance though.

Connor had an AR-15 too. About two thirds of the way down the page:
.
"At that point, Conner returned fire against Stacy with his AR-15."
.
This happened back on July 29th. Don't you remember all the media coverage? Could be because there wasn't any. Shocking, huh?
.
Besides having an AR-15, Conner also had time to prepare a superior position, and apparently he did while he heard the sirens approaching. Another article:

This article says the police estimated the distance to be 150 feet, not 165 yards. That sounds more plausible.

.
It also fits the geography, since the RV park isn't anywhere near 165 yards long or wide.

Now I have to correct myself. The official press release said he had a 30-30.

That takes us back to wondering how the cop was outgunned. Maybe the media made that up for 'effect'.
.
Why does the software not allow blank lines anymore? I can't create a new paragraph without creating UBB code to make a blank line. Yeah, I know you guys don't know the answer. Just frustrating.

Exactly what I was thinking. If having an AR-15 means you are out gunned against an idiot in a trailer park, what the heck is our police force and military doing carrying them???

Umm... I reread it and there is no mention of what gun Conner had, the only gun mentioned by identification in the OP linked article is the LOE's AR15.

Post entry: Per the above provided link provided by Rino (thank you) Connor had a 30-30. In that case the LEO was out powered but I'm not sure he was "out gunned".

The GOA article did say "At that point, Conner returned fire against Stacy with his AR-15." The fifth paragraph under "A Helping Hand".

Score one for the armed law-abiding citizen!

I agree that the responding officer should not have felt out-gunned, and the Sheriff's statement does not say anything like that. That appears to be a media-enhanced part of the story. ~150 feet with a .357 is also certainly not out of the realm of possibility to score hits like that. I'll say this though: It sure is great to have someone providing flanking fire on your behalf when you're in a gunfight!

Old story from several months ago. And Vic Stacy was not thanked immediately, or even quickly. Immediately and quickly, he was disarmed, thrown in handcuffs, and thrown face first into the dirt and gravel to stay there for at least 20 minutes. Only thereafter was he given sheepish gratitude.

Thanks. We all knew that information. Story was posted same day it hit the wire.

Those distances don't seem implausible to me. Back in the day, 20 or more years ago, I used to shoot out to 90-120 feet on targets with 9mm and forty cal.
I used to run a video store and would take the card board "standies" out to a sand pit at crazy distances.
It was a blast and my friends and I would see who could make the best hits.
