Gun Free Schools Zones Act

Is there anything worse than this law?

No carrying a gun without a state issued permit within 1000 feet of a school.
Out of state permit reciprocity does not exempt you.
If you violate this, you will never be allowed to buy guns or own them.
You can be fined a few thousand dollars and put in prison for 5 years.
Off duty police and their LEOSA does not cover them in other states which renders it very risky for sworn police officers to carry in other states.
Effectively, this federal law also tears away at state laws that allow unlicensed carry.
It also tears apart reciprocity between states because your permit only exempts you from the 1000 feet in the state your permit was issued in.

I dont know about you guys, but if I didnt have my permit, I would be put in prison and not allowed to own guns for the rest of my life if I stepped onto the street in front of my house exercising my right to open carry without a permit in this state. How ridiculous is that! Any of you taken the time to locate schools and see how far 1000 feet is from them? Its outrageous. Only a liberal would define a school zone as 3.3 football fields away from any school.

It's all about the chilllldrrreeennn. The little socialist nazi's... the government indoctrination program. The obam youth camp.

I've looked. And some states say that the heck with the Fed zone, you are covered if we accept your state's permit. But what they say isn't what the Feds say.

Don't forget - it was good ol' W who pushed for and signed the first GFSZA that established the 1,000 ft rule in 1990 in the wake of Columbine. It was W who pushed for the legislation that makes it illegal for you to discharge your firearm in the defense of your person, your family, or your home if you live in the exclusion zone. When the government reacts to tragedies like Columbine "for our own protection", it makes for oppressive laws. Ron Paul submitted legislation to repeal the GFSZA, but it has been trapped in committee since last July. We all need to contact our legislators to put pressure on them to get it out of committee and onto the floor for a vote - and the pressure needs to be applied during this election cycle, when it will have the most impact. I only hope (but I'm not holding my breath) that it can get out of committee before Chuck Schumer's bill that will require private citizens to obtain background checks before before selling their firearms privately (not that the two bills really have anything to do with each other; it's just another way to infringe on our Second Amendment rights, and I hope Schumer's bill dies in committee where it has been stuck for the last year).

Hmm, according to Okla law, you cannot carry into the school, but may have weapon on school property while in your vehicle picking up or dropping off students. You cannot leave the weapon in an unattended vehicle. This is of course, you are licensed to carry. Federal law trumping state law comes into mind here. I live (as the crow flies) about a block and a half from an elementary school. If I have to use my weapon on my property, I will deal with any "within X feet of a school" crap that comes my way. Any stupid "law" will not prevent me from defending me or mine, regardless where it may happen.

I have a friend who has a school at each end of his street. He must pass one or the other every time he leaves his house. One school is about 500 ffeet away from his home.

If you are on your own property, GFSZA does not apply. Or on the property of someone else who allows you to be there. Also the Feds exempt those who have the same state's CCW license/permit if a background check has been done as part of the permit process from the traveling thru the GFSZA zone if your state does. Does not cover those who have permits but are in a different state than the one that issued you one.

If he has a state issued permit/license and your state says it's ok, then he should have no problems.

And to think back in 07 Texas passed the motorist protection act, basically if you can legally own a pistol (and over 21 years old) you can legally carry it concealed in your car. So that means here that driving pas a school on a public road could get you in a lot of trouble. But it doesnt matter once again the fed is over stepping their bounds and dabbling in what should be a state matter...

All of this is 100% true and written with appropriate and valid degrees of righteous indignation. What I find incongruous though, is that the target-audience of the ideas expressed in this writing, are about to nominate the least-committed to the 2A Republican candidate in modern memory because he's ostensibly the "only one who can win." Does anyone believe that anything having to do with gun free zones is even on Romney's radar? And if it is, is it from our side of the argument, or the anti's side?

I read the first letter linked to Sen. Levin and feel much the same way about that. A beautifully-written letter, but a total waste of time and energy. Levin is even less likely to pay a lick of attention to such ideas than Romney is.

I don't know or have all the answers. Seems one place to start though, is no more compromising on supposedly "conservative" candidates. Conservatism, firmly based and articulated in founding principles, works every time it's tried. When it comes to the Constitution, what is the difference between compromise and surrender? None that I can see.

All of the arguments for infringement of rights won't silence the tears of a grieving mother who loses her child to gun violence in a place where her child is trusted to be be safe. We have a responsibility.......

Yes, this was actually a Bloomy comment.

Columbine....I agree if we had the GFSZA it never would have happened because we all know that those two would have obeyed the law not to bring a gun to school. Let's not worry about the possession laws and murder laws that they already broke. No no no! This one would have done it!

My son goes to school in CT. No guns in or on school property except police (general release from all prohibition statutes) or with written permission per state law. No permit exemption. Class D Felony.

Sec. 53a-217b Possession of A Weapon on School Grounds: Class D Felony.
(a) A person is guilty of possession of a weapon on school grounds when, knowing that he is not licensed or privileged to do so, he possesses a firearm or deadly weapon, as defined in section 53a-3, (1) in or on the real property comprising a public or private elementary or secondary school or (2) at a school-sponsored activity as defined in subsection (h) of section 10-233a.

There was a specific exemption for permit holders removed from this statute in 2004.

Catholic school, not even bothering to ask for a permission slip. Nice to park at the pharmacy and leave the gun in the car every day. At least my son is getting a good lesson in stupid laws in addition to his education there.

It could be argued that the clause of "licensed or privileged" means a pistol permit, but the AG has Stated that pistol permit holders need written permission. Not sure when the AG got to override the legislature but there have been people convicted based on his opinion. Nice country we're making for ourselves.

How many time when we are traveling, have we inadvertently violated this rule and driven right past a school....Well within the 1000 feet rule.

Columbine could have had a lot fewer victims if the first responding officers had confronted the shooters instead of waiting on SWAT. (Tactics at the time were to cover all exits and wait on SWAT)

That shooting made LEO rethink all active shooter cases.

This part of the topic could very easily hijack the thread...
I have started a new thread if folks are interested...
Active Shooter....

Lol I love when liberals talk about "gun violence". But what exactly is "gun violence"? Is it when the gun decides to kill people? I could have sworn it took a human to operate a gun. I guess I need to sit down tonight and have a stern conversation with my gun and explain to him that murder is not okay and I might have to put him in time out.

I also need to lock up all my knives. The last thing I would want is for them to walk out my door and start stabbing people. Darn knife violence.
