A new father was beaten into unconsciousness and is on life support after being attacked and beaten by three kids, ages 15-16, at a Grand Rapids, MI, elementary school. There are two accounts of what happened, neither of which are good and do nothing to change the ending.

Account one is that the 24 year old new father was watching some young children as they played at the school, and the three thugs began harassing them; the father tried to get them to leave the kids alone, so they attacked him.

Account two, given by one of the thugs, says that he was accidentally hit in the head when a basketball went wild (he isn't accusing anyone of actually trying to hit the him with the basketball), and instead of falling all over himself to apologize, the young father was amused by what happened (hey, we've all been there; it can be incredibly amusing when something like this happens), so he hit him (just once), then three unknown individuals "stomped" him.

Anyone know what's coming next?

The mother of the 16-year-old and his stepfather appeared in juvenile court to support him. His mother said she had not spoken to her son about what happened but described him as a good kid.

It is unknown at this time if the father will survive his injuries.

It is also unknown at this time if he had a carry permit, not that it would have prevented the beating if he was dutifully following the law and left his concealment gun at home since the beating happened on elementary school property.

This school is only about 1.5 miles from my home. I haven't openly carried to this point, but garbage like this makes me think that, since I have my CPL and can legally OC on school property in MI, I may need to start - at least while I am on school property. I also have sons of my own who would like to be able to do things around the neighborhood on their own - you know, like most of us here were able to do when we were kids. But knowing that there are thugs like this roaming around scares my wife that one of OUR kids could be on the receiving end of an unprovoked beating one day.

Time to move.

You are making two conflicting statements. First you say he could not legally carry a gun to defend himself because he was on elementary school property in MI...a gun free zone. And then you say you may need to start legally carrying your gun on school property....

Don't get me wrong - any extra restrictions of guns just because it is school property is 100% wrong, IMHO. However, the victim in this case - if he could qualify for and afford the CPL - could have carried a gun for self protection.

Yup - my bad. I guess what I was trying to comunicate is that many concealed carriers will leave their firearm home rather than carry openly on school property, even though MI law permits it with a CPL. I may need to start taking advantage of that provision myself.

Very true.
