Gun Decisions

I have owned many calibers of pistols and a few rifles. But I have recently given away a 9mm, a .357 Mag, and a .380 to some of my relatives as gifts. This leaves me with a Bersa Thunder .380, a Thunder .32 acp, and a Kel Tec P-32 .32 acp as the only guns I have.
Now some of you I'm sure are already saying, "this guy is nuts". But I really like the way the two Bersa guns shoot, dependable and accurate, and the P-32 is a great pocket pistol. I believe these guns will protect me well. I keep them all loaded, and for home defense would grab the .380 first. But those who doubt the .32 acp think about this. Online there is a video showing the .32 acp loaded with FMJ and from 10 feet away going thru 4 layers of denim and then penetrating ballistic gel 14 inches.

Has anyone else had an epiphany of this sort with their handguns?

Nope.

Hi cluznar, this is very nice of you to share with your relatives. My question is does your relatives have any experience, are they comfortable with firearms??? I wish I had you for a relative! :p

Yep. When I was about 9 years old I had the epiphany that any caliber of firearm has the potential to be dangerous to both self and others. However, about 13 years later when I was educating myself about what I wanted to carry, I also came to the conclusion that I wanted the strongest round I could effectively handle. After cutting my eye teeth with a .22 mag revolver for a year or so, I went to 9mm for a long time, and then to .45 from there. Have never daily-carried anything below a 9mm since then, and now that I can open carry since a new law went into effect, I may never carry anything but a .45 again.

Penetration ain't everything. Foot-pounds of energy is a more significant stat to me. And how safe I "feel" really doesn't enter into the equation - it's what the science of ballistics clearly demonstrates that I count on, not arbitrary feelings. The only caveat I'd add to that is that if I'm feeling like I'm no longer able to handle a .45 effectively, I would consider that feeling while deciding to drop down to a more manageable round, but for now, I rely on the science of ballistics.

^^ well said.

My choice of firearm and firearm caliber better not be based on feelings or epiphany, but cold hard facts. Facts are, larger calibers do a better job if you can handle them. If you can't, get the largest caliber that you can handle effectively. If that happens to be a .32 then so be it. But by your statements, this is not the case.

How many posts is this now for you cluznar praising the .32? This is by no means an epiphany for you at this stage of the game, just another rant trying to bait people into a caliber war.

Not at all Wolf_Fire I am not against big calibers or any calibers. As I said I have owned many calibers. My friends and relatives own many calibers. But I have sold and given away guns as gifts because I have finally decided what guns I need for home/self defense. I really liked some of the higher caliber guns that I gave away. But I just realized that the .380 and .32 seemed like perfect guns for me.

Have a bersa 380cc for my wife, fun and easy to shoot and great for my petite wife. Personally I think we can dance around calibers and ballistics all you want but if someone on a three day meth binge is coming at my family or breaking into my house I'm using large metal---- 45 cal. I know it's personal preference BUT it's my personal preference!!! To each there own
