Just a heads up : Our Not-Qualified-To-Be President is getting ready to announce his gun control proposals at 11:55 AM on most of the major news networks.
Let's get your opinions / reatcions on what's proposed!

It looks like the "Big Three" that will need Congressional action are:
1. requiring a universal background check on anyone buying a gun in the U.S.;
2. restoring the ban on assault style weapons; and
3. banning gun magazines that hold over 10 rounds of ammunition.

Looks like the major emphasis will be on pushing #'s 1 and 3 through Congress. Restoring a ban on assault style weapons (#2) is unlikely to make it through Congress.

I'm not against number 1. I just don't think it's government that should be responsible for the background check. It's none of their business which law abiding citizens own which firearms, etc.

One aspect of the orders needs serious checks & balances. He states that Obamacare does not prevent doctors from asking patients if they have guns. Of course that will get tied in with their "duty" to report people who are not mentally fit to have guns. In principal it sounds ok, keep guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable! HOWEVER, the danger is that incompetent and careless doctors and their staffs may put people on "the list" without justification. There have been many examples of people being on the No Fly List incorrectly. Also, people trying to buy guns failing a background check because someone entered incorrect data. Yes, we need that ability of doctors to flag the mentally unstable but we also need to ensure it's done properly.

Some of the stuff i always have thought was standard and waste of our dollars. Some was down right wrong. Few were ok like incentives for schools with resource officers is good. Nc has resource officers already.

Guess I'll buy that lower AR assembly before its a no go.

I'm ok with the back ground check. It will just take forever to get checked out.

Really 10 round mags? Dumb!!!

The first thing that I see as happening is going to be "mental health" reporting. I see it as you make a statement to a counselor similar to "some times I just feel like screaming" and that will get reported as a threat of violence and, at a minimum, you will be denied by NICS, and at most a court order banning your possession of firearms.

I'd like to see congressional opponents of these measures hold their own little photo-op with children who were saved by firearms like that young pregnant woman in OK last yr and the woman in Atlanta who recently defended herself and her children against a thug bent on mayhem. There are plenty of others as well.

Yeah but how much stuff is he proposing to Congress that we will not be aware of till it is on paper and signed. I bet there is a huge list of proposals that will be approved at the last minute. Just my thoughts.

I see many with real life mental health problems not seeking help due to this.

I'm torn on the mental health issue. While I certainly want to keep guns out of the hands of the loonies as much as possible, I'm not crazy about a national database. That smacks of Nazi Germany and Stalinist USSR. Also some of the new definitions of "mental illness" are alarming. For example, in many medical circles in this country, if you're depressed for more than 3 days in a row (like mourning the death of a friend or family member) you can be considered mentally ill. There are others as well. That's scary.

I still cant find the list of the 24 Executive Order Actions he can take that have been posted on every web page i have seen. Just sharing my thoughts.

maybe I'm looking at this wrong, but it appears that all that Obama managed to do was

1) remind some people that certain things are legal for them to do (like doctors asking about guns in the home)...this isn't new. it was already legal.

2) ask that "crazy" be reevaluated to maybe catch more people likely to shoot a place up...this is already on ongoing process and while pointless since most of these mass shooters didn't obtain their weapons legally it's nothing new.

3) make it even more illegal to lie on your background check form. (oooh! it's even MORE illegal to lie on your application now)

4) make it easier to catch people lying on their background application.

5) requested that Congress "do something"...which is comepletly non-binding and hollow.

so, at the end of the day, with much fanfare, noise, and media circus Emperor Obama the First managed to look busy while accomplishing nothing.

...maybe he IS still afraid of the armed citizens of this country.

I could be on board with #7 if they run it like cash for clunkers...trade in my old gun lock/safe for the new Cannon safe i've been eyeing up....

+1

how about tax breaks for installing a gun safe in your home (or in your rental properties for your tenants if you own some).

Obama says he acknowledges that Americans have certain unalienable rights, but with those rights come responsibilities, and that Americans are "responsible for each other." These rights – including those to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – were denied to victims of high profile shooting such as those at Virginia Tech last decade and the December 14 shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

My Thoughts:
I am not responsible for what a mad person does. Even if a child's life is took. I am also not responsible for another persons actions. This is nothing more then a simple attack against all Americans who are responsible gun owners and it invades our second amendment rights that our founding fathers gave to us all. Just my thoughts. Nothing more then political BS.

Background Check?

I'm not against number 1. I just don't think it's government that should be responsible for the background check. It's none of their business which law abiding citizens own which firearms, etc.

We need a better "Background Check" for people running for political offices.
That will help solve a lot of simple problems, like electing people that have no common sense, or a clue on how this country was founded and what it stands for!

I agree this should be a real fear among us!
