Gun Board Review - Michigan

Hello all.
I'm new here...this is my first post on usacarry. Great to be here.

Recently I've purchased a Glock 19 and have been practicing with it at my local range. I also decided to get my CPL, so I did all of the necessary steps and now I must meet with the review board. I've done the fingerprints, the background check, paid my 105 dollars to the county clerk, etc...I have no convictions of any kind. I am of sound mind. I have no vendettas against anyone. I'm just a guy looking to protect himself and his family.
Tomorrow at 10am, I'll be meeting with the gun review board and I'm not exactly sure why I have to meet with them.
I'm not nervous or anything---I guess, I'm just not sure what to expect.
Are they going to pepper me with all sorts of questions?
I guess we'll see how it goes.
Anyhow, I'll come back to update how it went and what it was all about.
Thank for reading.

They'll ask questions and if it's like my County there will be several other applicants. They asked basic questions about your answers on the application and what I planned to carry. Nothing to be nervous about.

gun board

Macomb county gun board is not a big deal. They will ask you a few questions like maybe 5 or so just answer question. My wife just got her CPL a few weeks ago. Also there is a website about going in front of the gun board, the type of questions they ask. Go to to macomb county gun board licensed website. GOOD LUCK

I'm surprised there is still a gun board. In Wayne County it's just a matter of a certificate, application, and they take your prints. I guess they figure Detroit area residents need a fighting chance. You should have no problem.

Well, it wasn't as painful as I'd thought.
There were many people there---given the fact that this is somewhat of a smaller town in Michigan...about 65 people getting their CPL. Then there was the county sheriff, the DA, & county clerk all presiding over us. They took roll call and everyone was there expect a few who got a pardon by the sheriff. We all raised our right hands and were sworn in that we're telling the truth, etc...
The sheriff stood up and asked all of us questions. We answered out loud as a group. Then he gave us his schpeeil about how this is serious business and we have to make sure that we're ready to shoot another human being if our lives are in danger. He said that a lot of people cannot point their weapon at another human being and pull the trigger and kill them. Taking a life isn't like on TV. It's real. Killing another human being is a very big deal and it's very real.
He said if someone is trying to kill you and you cannot shoot them---DO NOT GET A LICENSE AND LEAVE NOW.
I don't want people pulling their gun out and waving it around he said.
It was really crazy when he was saying that. The vibe of that room changed pretty quickly.
Then he turned it over to the clerk and she told us to go downstairs and pick up our licenses. They were already laminated and waiting for us. There were all sorts of people. Young people, old people, pretty girls, husband and wife teams, hunters, truck driver, businessmen, etc. It was a real mix of society. Pretty interesting. I guess when you get down to it...it really doesn't matter who you are or what you look like, I mean, everyone wants to feel safe and have that extra level of protection.
It was an interesting experience --- but also seemed like a waste of time-- I mean, we already went through all the checks on a state and federal level.
I had to take off work and get a baby sitter just for that?!
It seemed kind of unnecessary---but whatever, I've got my license and it feels good.

Wasn't someone from the State Police there? It sounds like you're in a County that is pretty good about the permits. My County in SW Michigan is pretty good and is making it easier while a neighboring County was doing the opposite. When a friends license went up for renewal he had to drive 30 miles to attend a meeting with the gun board to renew. He also had to wait long enough that he was wondering what to do if he didn't get his new license before the old one expired. I went to the Clerks office in my County to apply and then to the Sherrifs Dept for prints. A notice came in the mail a week later that my license was ready. I won't have to have prints next time because they did the electronic prints this time. There was some talk about the SOS doing CPL's but I don't know whether that's going to happen.Glad to hear it went well.

Welcome to the forum and the MI CCW club. The state police released their most recent monthly state-wide CCW data 3/2/12. MI now has issued permits to 305,108 residents. You can see county by county totals at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/msp/ccw_county_report_approved_273955_7.pdf

Extrapolating from the 2010 census, 4% of Macomb County residents have CCW permits and that doesn't count those exempt from CCW permit requirements (i.e. off duty LEOs).

I feel safer every day knowing that statistically, 1 out of every 25 adults I see in the county may be legally armed.
