grips

For a proper grasp of a weapon, and proper control the trigger,
should you be able to reach the trigger with the second joint of the trigger finger?

Another "no." Are you asking because you shoot in such a manner, or because you've heard that such reach is somehow desirable? The center of the pad, before you reach the first knuckle, is sufficient. Anything more---barring some physical impediment that makes the above impossible---and you'll likely be pulling your shots off target.

I saw this on another blog and wanted more opinions! I think the writer of that blog was referring to the size of the the grip and using the second joint as a measuring standard for the gun to fit the hand properly. More insight is welcome.
I use the pad of the first joint on my trigger finger.

I've found that a handgun grip really fits my hand if, when I am holding it to fire it, with my finger on the trigger, I can easily insert a pencil down inside the second knuckle (between the third joint on my index finger and the slide).
That way I'm using the pad on the first joint for the trigger pull, and not having to stretch to reach it.
If the pencil is too tight, it means the handgrip is too large for my hand.
Make sense?

There is no need to do so. You should be pulling the trigger with the pad of your finger tip, or the first joint/knuckle, depending of which is easier for you to use to pull the trigger straight back, as opposed to torquing the gun in your grasp as you pull back, or causing your finger to pull rearward at an angle other than straight back, parallel to the barrel.

Now, IF you can stick your finger through the trigger guard to the second knuckle, that may just be a matter of the size of your hand and length of your fingers versus the size of your gun. For example, I can stick my finger a lot farther into the guard on my Nano than I can on my PPQ, simply due to one being a single stack, and a micro, and the other being a service pistol with a double stack mag.
