Gray areas in the Sportsman's restriction NYS

I've done some looking and i did a quick search of these boards but i'm finding it difficult to get a clear and straight answer on what activities EXACTLY is a sportsman's license holder allowed to carry.

My instructor, an ex Oswego county sheriff basically stated that his former colleagues would take many excuses for carrying if related to sporting activities(motorsports included ie. motorcycles.) All the paperwork i've received from my sheriffs office basically makes it seem cut and dry. Hiking, hunting, camping and target shooting. It doesn't say anything along to lines of "etc" or "and the like."

I don't own a motorcycle but I do walk my dog almost every single day through a chunk of remote state land. Does that constitute hiking? I know people hunt and target shoot there, you can't walk 50 feet without seeing shell casings on the ground. Am i within my rights to carry and shoot there? Do i still need to chamber lock and store my Beretta in the trunk on the way?

Basically does anyone have any first hand knowledge of what is acceptable activity to carry with a sportsman's restriction in Onondoga county?

Also forgive me if this topic may have come up previously.

Look under New York State section of this forum...This has been discussed from every possible angle. Mostly you will get peoples "opinion" on how they feel the law is meant to be interpreted.

Start an urban hiking group. Then always wear your "hiking" shoes.

"Remote state land" where hunting and target shooting is allowed pretty much falls squarely into your license restrictions. If you want to be extra cautious get a small game hunting license, then wear the backtag (if you are in the southern zone). Red squirrel and feral hog are open all year.

Oswego County
Oswego County has restricted my pistol permit more and helped me less. I decided to ask for a “unrestricted concealed carry permit”. My concealed carry permit was restricted carry concealed to and from the range to and from hunting and employment requiring a hand gun as a requirement for employment. I wanted to update it to unrestricted but would exept what they are calling a “sportsman”. My permit now states “dwelling, employment and sportsman”. I wanted to use my hand gun on my ATV and hiking and other activity’s. I had to sign a statement saying that I could NOT carry concealed “TO AND FROM”. I could carry “while actively engaged” in such activity’s. In order for me to go to and from and transport the weapon it must be in a compartment, unloaded, locked and not with the ammo. It also can not assessable to the driver or passenger. The compartment must also be other than the glove box or console. I am fine with Oswego County restricting my permit as stated. I think that it is wildly inappropriate to restrict carrying in my vehicle going to and from activity’s. There is no better prize than a hand gun to those that engage in crime. Restricting me more while in and out of my vehicle leaves my weapon open for theft and use agents me at any time before I engage in activity’s. If you also think this is wildly inappropriate please wright.

Does that judge require everyone with a restricted permit to sign a statement acknowledging they can't carry to and from?

NY State gun laws & regs are pretty much Black & White and the only grey area you will come across is whether or not the officer is going to believe your story on why you are carrying out of your restrictions. If the officer believes walking your dog in a state park, hence hiking falls under your restrictions? Fine, your cool. If I was you, I would play it safe and by the book until you move or apply for an unrestricted permit. Remember, the Judge can revoke your permit at will, so be careful!
