Good Leo encounter in S.C.

My employer had a company truck sitting on a job site that was vandalized and they wanted to file a report with the local sheriffs dept. A deputy arrived and started looking at the truck while making his report, he then started asking me my dob, height,weight,eye color, DL# and so on. I know that officers will run people's info that they come in contact with just to check for warrants and things, so I told him if he was going to run my info that I needed to tell him I had a CCP an was armed, he said that was okay and that I didn't need to reach for it and we would get along just fine, he also said that since he couldn't see my firearm he was pretty sure his was bigger, after a good laugh by both of us he shook my hand and told me were to pick up the report, he even rode through the job later on that day and gave a big wave and a smile and asked if everything was okay, I dont know if I was supposed to tell him of my CWP, but since he had all of my info and may run it through the computer I decided to play it safe and tell him just in case, I felt this officer handled everything text book and I'm glad he's on the job, well done sir !

You did good. The law states you must inform if he ask for your identification. Since she asked you all the pertinent info that Id's you I think that falls in line with the law and you have to declare your CWP.

Legally you did not have to tell the officer when you did, but they were certainly getting close to the point when you would legally have to. You represented concealed carry well, showing mutual respect. If you had not, I would not hold that against you. Some people would choose not to unless legally required, and I am personally cool with that also. But I think you did the right thing!

I think Red Hat is right. I just hand the LEO my CWP when I hand him my Driver's License.

Islander is also correct in that you represented CWP holders very well. Most LEOs in SC (which is where I live) are respectful, and even encourage, concealed carry with the permit. They know that they won't be there when your live is in danger unless it is by pure chance.

Good Encounter...SC

Couple of months ago I was stopped for speeding on my motorcycle (my fault). When I pulled out my DL the officier saw my CWP in my wallet and asked if I had a weapon. I told him no as I was headed to work at a local hospital and am not allowed to carry there. Nothing else was said. If I had been armed I would have given him both at the same time. Other than a ticket everything was OK.

I have talked to many state and local SC LEO's and all are fine with civilians being legally armed.

Have never had any problems whatsoever with SC LEOs. Can even relate story many years ago when travelling thru SC before moving here. Had unloaded parents apartment after father died and car was packed with back window pretty well covered. Raining very hard in morning with fog in car windows and I get off I95 to find a breakfast place and cannot see worth a darn, but going slow. Pull over to recompose myself and a trooper pulls up behind me. He gets out of his car after putting his trooper hat on and in the rain comes over to my car asking me if I have a problem. I tell him I'm looking for a breakfast place (I am nervous because my car is really packed and I cannot see that well with the fogged windows-figuring this is maybe why he pulled me over). He answers me by pointing almost across the road to 2 places almost side by side and says--"If you want so-so breakfast go to this place, but if you want really good breakfast go to that place". I thanked him, he told me to be careful and I had a very good breakfast.
