Well, 3 nights ago [Febuary 4 2011] around 2am I was laying in bed with the wife, I heard the dog barking, and some muffled, what I thought was music, just heard words, no beats, [kinda weird] after a minute, I didnt hear it any longer, then, it would start up again. I thought nothing of it, thought maybe the neighboors were having another party.
I jumped out of bed grabbed my gun and slid it into my waist band [I always do no matter where Im at] I went down stairs and was going to let the dog outside thinking maybe he had to pee.
Roughly 5 minutes after I went downstairs I heard 4-5 gun shots. It wasnt close, but I peered out the window, noone was in the street, although I did realize the "music" was infact arguing. I let the dog out and of course wanted to know what was going on. Ive only lived in the City of Flint [Michigan] for a little over two months, and knowing the city doesnt have the best reputation, I have always kept my weapon on me.
I continued to listen to the yelling, and walked to the front of my driveway only to observe 7-8 people running to their car. One of the guys had seen me at this point on my cell phone. He took off his shirt and started approaching me throwing his hands up like he wants to fight, yelling "you gonna call the cops on me boy, Ill beat yo ass" I ignored him and continued to relay the info to the police. They informed me they had officers on the way.
I then heard someone else say "Come on B Ive got the gun, we gotta go, we gotta go" inbetween that, they mentioned someone with them was "bleeding to death" and had to take him to the hospital.
Amongst all of this, the guy is still walking towards me, he stopped once he seen me putting my hand on something in the hip region. He ran back to his truck and they left. The dispatcher hung up with me and of course being a good person, I couldnt live with myself knowing a small gun fight broke out hearing that someone else had been shot, and thinking someone was laying in the snow bleeding out.
I got in my car and drove litterally two houses down onto the next street to observe and wait for LEOs.
State police showed up, I informed them I was the caller and wanted to make sure noone else was laying in the snow. I passed along the newly aquired info about somone being shot and told him what Id heard...City of Flint LEOs showed up, and they for what ever reason, assumed I was shot, or was shot at. The Flint LEO asked to see my ID. I told him I was a CPL holder and I was carrying concealed. He said that was fine and said as long as I didnt pull my weapon, he was OK with it.
He ran my ID for what ever reason, came back to me and asked me to show him my gun. I told him I wasnt going to draw my loaded weapon and asked him to do it to eliminate any confusion other officers may have. He pulled my gun off my hip then smelled the barrel. I informed him again, the safety was not on, and that it had a round in the chamber...He didnt care, he just asked if I shot at the people, I told him no. He put my weapon back.
One LEO even asked me why I didnt stop the people from driving off? -.- I told him I heard they had a gun, there was more than 1 person, and that, honestly it was none of my business to stop them, I wasnt looking for trouble, Im not an LEO nor is it my job to stop a shooter unless my life or someone elses life is in danger. He laughed and said, " well you heard shots, so technically someones was..." WTF?
Anyhow, good encounter, although I dont see why I was in a way for a moment a suspect. Overall I gave the City LEOs a 10/10 the Officer was very friendly, and in a way, kinda cool. Theres a little more to the story, but I kept the relivant stuff in here. Think I did the right thing?
Id like your guys take on this all.
