Patriots

I started to buy this book but the reviews I read were mixed, including a very detailed review that was not positive. It sounds it's not a fictional story but a detailed list of what and why to have. The review said that there was no plot or character development. I don't know I haven't read the book, but I'm just saying that the reviews for the most of them I read were not all that great so I didn't buy it.

It's a nice story, not Clancy or Ludlum, but kept my attention. Read it about 6 months ago.
However, the value is that the story is a thin disguise for a fairly good primer in bug-out and survival. Emphasis is more on tactical and security, but food, transportation in the event of bug-out, clothing, and even some social aspects are addressed.

The story gave enough character development to make it seem to have real people involved. But, it is really a how-to with a story around it. I think it would actually make a great movie! With some editing and such of course.

Cons:
The first couple of chapters provide some, key word some information on preparations. But really, this is a fantasy story. The concepts are sound, but in today's economy how many of us can have steel plates made for our windows, a custom made 4" thick steel front door, dynamite in bulk along with blasting caps, C4, etc. Good enough for a late night low budget flick on TBS, but nothing new or riveting is offered to the hunter, farmer or military veteran. If you are one of the sheeple who has just awaken to the possibility that our country is on a steep slope to ruin or that the Government is NOT there to help YOU, then this might be a nice introduction to what could happen.

Pros: (I like to leave on a positive note)
Nicely written, not graphic or is excessively violence, no profanity which is a plus. I do like the group has a strong broad religious base and that helping your neighbor and doing no harm to non-threats is a concept that is lacking in most Hollywood productions. I do plan on having my teen age son read this over the summer to fuel some conversations.

i read the book and liked it overall. He ascribes to the sovereign citizen movement that is pretty crazy. It is still a great read, even if you are prepared, it gets you to think about things.

Another good read is the "The Union Creek Journal", look it up online, the guy is writing the book on Wordpress. It is still being added to so the story is not finished.

I am a Christian but I do not agree with Rawles politics. I read both books. His constant reference to military nomenclature, calculated to establish himself as knowledgeable, seemed awkward to me.

As a group survivalist person, who has visited several new prepper groups in person and on the internet, I can only envy the luck of the group described in Patriot. There are deep schisms in almost every group that I have checked on. About half of the people are serious survivalists, trying to learn all they can, find a like minded group to join, and get on with it.
The other half of Preppers are hobbyists, playing with survivalist skills and quick to say, "lets not be paranoid. Obama is doing a good job. We should work closely with FEMA and the FBI. etc."
Being in the first group, I perceive the second group as the type of people who got us into this mess and if they survive, we will be forever enslaved.
