Going to the range?

I just got my permit. and will be purchasing my first handgun shortly. I have never been to a range before. I am wondering what is the correct and legal way to transport your gun and ammunition to the range. May sound like a silly question. But i want to make sure i do it the right way.

Thanks,
Rob

Congratulations on your permit. :) Going to the range and practicing with the weapon you will be carrying is a very good thing. If you do not have the proper holster to carry to the range then use the box the weapon came into transport to the range. If you dont have the box the weapon came in find another box that it will fit in. You can carry it to the range unloaded if that makes you feel safer. I highly recommend getting a good IWB holster for concealed carry or a different type if it is going to be Open carry. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I want to make sure that if going to the range it had to be in seperate locked containers or something like that. Can the ammo be brought in just a regular container as well?

Years ago I went to Wal-Mart and bought an aluminum case used for carrying camera equipment in. I now use that for ammo, ear protection, spare ammo, cleaning kit and handguns. Works perfectly for that. I know this probably goes without saying BUT whatever you do do NOT walk into the range holding the weapon in your hand. That would make for a very bad day. :)

Most public ranges have an "instructor" you can hire for a 1/2 hour session. He or she will not only give you some good pointers on using your weapon, but will also inform you about all the rules and expected etiquette at that particular range.

Alternatively, before bringing your weapon to the range stop at the range and ask for the rules, then a quick tour.

If they don't have any written rules, go to another range.

Is it a CCP or just the regular?

If it's CCP carry it in your CC holster . If it's a regular, you have to carry it, on the seat, unloaded with the ammo locked away in the locked glove box or trunk, away from the weapon.

Some ranges make you use thier ammo or pay extra before using yours...transportation rules are usually different if you dont have a ccw and out of state license holders must carry unloaded in the trunk

No need to carry ammo in any special manner in NY. There is also no law requiring persons with a premise permit to carry anything in a locked box.

I realize I am not in NY, but for the conversation at my particular range, if you cc into the range it must be kept concealed. Any gun you want to shoot must be in some type of case or bag. I have carried ammo into the range in factory box it came in. They only check the ammo to make sure it is not steel, and they have never checked my gun. I usually have my ccw in my holster and shoot whatever I took with me. I recently picked up a P22 and and look forward to spending some quality time at the range shooting it. Have fun, and congrats on the new permit.
