Glock vs. 1911 - Thoughts on an Ongoing Debate

VDMA VIDEOS
I've been on gun forums long enough to know that if you want to stir up a hornet's next of controversy, just go ahead and say that the 1911 is an old, worn out design or say that the Glock is just a plastic pistol, a hunk of junk.

Sadly, some new people to guns and shooting get caught up in these stupid discussions.

Here is a video I made that I hope adds a bit of light and less heat to the discussion.

I have something about Glocks I just don't like. I've never fired one or even held one.
It's almost like cars you like one and stick to it and say you won't buy from the other maker. It's in the DNA I guess. I can't explain it

I ended this debate the easy way, I have a Glock 27 and a Kimber Pro Carry II. Both are fantastic weapons. My primary for duty carry is a Glock 17.

Nice job on the comparison. I shoot both as well. I also have an XDm. My 1911 is my Sunday go to church gun with a limited amount of competition on the side. Glock my EDC and XDm is always somewhere close at the house. The XDM trigger is very similar in feel to the Glock.

I felt the same way you did...until I shot one. Now I own 3 of them. For the money, you can't beat a Glock for performance or reliability. Now excuse me while I duck for cover before the flaming begins.

Don't ever try one.

I still am a huge fan of John Browning's design and have a safe full of 1911's. Great design that brought pistols out of the dark ages. Perhaps, that's why his middle name was Moses.

However, the gun that looks like it was designed by Woody Woodpecker has to be shot to be believed.

The only thing I have against Glocks, is their ergonomics. I've shot them, and I shoot them well. They just do not feel "right" in my hands. I can't be an advocate of owning/carrying a handgun that isn't comfortable, because I feel that if it's uncomfortable in your hands, you'll never shoot it enough to become proficient with it. That's when a ball bat comes into play.

I have to agree with you....
My very first Glock was purchased back in 1993 (Glock 21)....
I have never looked back.

I'm a Glock fan for life.

I agree with BC1, a little apples and oranges here. I do not own a Glock. I have fired several (21, 26, 27), and there is no question but that Glock makes reliable and effective firearms. My son owns one, and he loves it. I shoot his from time to time. I would not argue against anyone purchasing/using a Glock, and in fact for many people it might just represent the best choice. I guess for me the issue is partly that I'm something of a dinosaur. The 1911 in .45 acp was the first "big bore" firearm I learned to shoot, and I just "got used to it." Then I came to love it. The full-size 1911 fits and feels better in my hand than any other pistol I've ever tried. Like Mr. Browning designed that thing just for me! Then there's the trigger. The trigger action on a 1911 in good working order (and especially if it's been "tuned" a little) seems to be the gold standard by which most semi-automatic pistols are measured. Very hard to beat. I shoot the 1911 in competition and carry it whenever I can. It is true there is a little more to learning and caring for a 1911, but it's not that difficult.

Not all 1911s have steel frames anymore these days.
The carry models (thinking specifically of Kimber, but other manufacturers follow suit I think) have frames made of high grade aluminum.

Glock is kinda ugly to me, but I sure wouldn't turn my nose up at one. I carry 1911 because it is what I am most accurate with.
I think that's mainly because of the trigger. The 1911 makes it easier for me to achieve good trigger control.

The one I shoot the best is the one I'm going to carry, and that's that.

I recently tried a Kahr, which may well replace the 1911 as my edc. Kahr makes the smoothest trigger I have ever felt (and I've tried quite a few!)
If Glock had a trigger like that I'd have one in a heartbeat.

I own both. I love my Colt series 80 but I carry either a G22 or a G23. My reason for going with Glock as a carry gun is higher capacity and ease of use of the Glock, just draw and squeeze.

I don't think there is anything intrinsically wrong with the 1911, both guns in my assessment are combat accurate it's just a personal preference. I've had friends that shoot in tournaments tell me the 1911 is a more accurate platform, maybe it is, but I carry a gun to defend myself from things that might be shooting back and I want the maximum amount of capacity to throw back at them without a mag change.

I must agree, Kahr has one of the smoothest triggers I have ever pulled. I've own both, a Colt 1911 and Glock 17 and shot them both well. Providing the trigger on the 1911 is working correctly. But other striker fired pistols don't seem to fare as well as the Glock in my opinion.
I have no problem owning them both, the up side to the Glock is the amount of ammo I can carry in a single mag.

When all is said and done. I can still pistol whip you AND drive a 16 penny nail with my 1911. A Glock will just break apart. Especially on the nail part or a hard headed BG. 1911's been around since.....err..........1911, some 102 years. Gee, kind of has me sold. Go with whats proven or don't. Glock's been around how long????????

STAY COCKED & LOCK my friend.
