Glock 23 Gen 4 Slide Issues

I now have about 1000 rounds through my gun and I'm having a few issues. In the past few weeks, I have put around 300 rounds through it and I have had an issue with the slide not staying back after the last shot and the slide staying open randomly.

In the last 300 rounds the...

Slide prematurely locked back 3 times

Slide stayed closed after the last shot 6 times.

For some background info, I bought the gun new, have done nothing to it, rotate through 3 magazines equally, use 165 grain winchester white box rounds, and clean it routinely. Also, the recoil spring was already updated so no issues there either.

I had one of the instructors/employees at the local gun shop look at the gun, check my form (to make sure I'm not limp wristing) check my grip, etc... He said everything looks good and that I'm not riding the slide release. He shot 8 rounds through it and had one malfunction.

That is everything I can think of at this point. Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise, it might be time to call Glock.

Yes, it happens with all three mags. I'm hoping to get to the range, again, tomorrow to run the mags through my friends Glock 27. If it happens on his gun, it's the mags. At this point, I'm kind of doubting all three mags are messed up.

It could be the ammo.
White box has been known to sometimes be lacking in the quality control process'
Maybe the whitebox ammo is getting even worse nowadays?
Try another brand of ammo and see how it goes.

If you are using glock mags i would say its the rounds your using. I usually shoot the 250 round umc ammo or blazer when i want to put rds down range with no problems.

I can give it a try. The other ammo I used was Winchester super x 185 grain hollow points. Had the same issue. I will try the blazers and umc's the next time out. Thanks for the recommendations

Send it back to Glock ammo not your problem gun issue for sure.Just because it says Glock on it does not make it fool proof a pissed off or drunk employee screws up will make a bad one just like any other mass produced item.

I'm kind of getting to that point. If the Peoples Republic of Illinois every passes concealed carry, this will be the gun I want to carry. I can't risk carrying something that has issues. Plus, I take great care of all of my toys. If I put the time and effort into taking care of them, I expect them to take care of me. (Almost sounds like a co-dependent relationship )

Hes right, it could have been a monday or friday gun. Since its new they should warranty it and fix it or give you a new one.

Quick update. Ran another 100 rounds through it this past weekend using two different, brand new mags. Still malfunctioning. So, I sent it back to Glock this afternoon. A little upset that I had to pay $70 in shipping for a warranty claim. Hopefully their customer service is decent.

On a side note. The Fed Ex World Shipping Center was very helpful in the shipping process. The person behind the desk was actually interested in why I was sending a Glock back. Couldn't believe there was something wrong.

glock 23 slide issues

Should have went with the Springfield XD or XDM...ready to go right out of the Box with no upgrades or "slide issues"...

Check your slide stop lever. Several Gen 4 had this issue. Call glock. They'll send u a replacement part. Problem solve. Don't be to quick to blame ammo or mags. You can pump 135 gr .40 s&w through that with no problems.

It's a shame nobody tried to put a new slide stop into that Glock BEFORE you spent $70.00 sending it back to the factory.

I forgot to put that in my update. I took the slide stop out of my friends 23 gen 4 and put it in mine. No difference. Good thought though.

So, now, in addition to all the other Gen 4 stuff that people are complaining about - RSA's, extractors, ejectors, connectors, and 'kick plate' (sear) angles - we've, also, got a slide stop problem to deal with! Has this new slide stop problem been verified? As long as it's properly installed, how do you screw up a slide stop? It's a very simple part. When is it ever going to end?

Just thinking out loud: If you've checked your magazines, then, is the SS cut in your slide located in the right place? It would have to be correct, though, because the other problem you're having is unexpected lockup. I'm wondering, just wondering, I've suspected for awhile now that these new RSA's have a tendency to, 'chatter'. So, what effect would RSA, 'chattering' have on slide performance? Exactly what you describe, yes!

Update as of 2/16. i called Glock to check the status of my firearm and to see what the plan was. I was told that they are going to replace the ejector and possibly the extractor.

I recently acquired an older Glock 17 (2nd gen) duty weapon and replaced both of those parts and then some. I believe those two parts would have cost me about $12 total and would have taken about 30 minutes to install, at most. My point is, I have spent $70 and have had my firearm held up for 4 to 6 weeks to do a $12 and 30 minute job.

Since I'm relatively new to handguns, I don't know what to expect. Is this the norm when dealing with the manufacturer?

I don't know actually. The only time I've ever involved Glock's service was to get the free spring update from Glock for a G22 gen 4. The other Glocks I own (thousands of rounds) along with the guys I know who together own about 19 Glocks of all gen's & available calibers have never had any issues. ...oops, forgot to consider a neighbor I recently went to the range with so make that about 21 Glocks.

My point, you ask? I dunno, just bored I suppose.

I think your point is, once I get this figured out I can have confidence in my Glock again. And... I shouldn't be afraid to get another one (or two or five)
