Getting Involved

I am a Life Member in the VFW and would like to see every veteran get involved. Now I don't do a lot of the things that the VFW does, I simply don't have the time, being employed full time. But what I do help with is being the Shooting Programs director at my local Post. Vets should see if their local post has a shooting group or club and get involved there. It breeds goodwill and good friends, and helps other vets in shooting related aspects. Besides shoot outings, we are holding classes in general firearms subjects such as bullet path and basic ballistics, how to set up a scope, how to zero a rifle, etc. Our latest classes are helping our friends build their own AR platform rifles. So, like I said . . . Get Involved!!!

This is an awesome idea. I am trying to get more organized events around where I live. We need more young veterans to join and become active members. I think group shooting activities would be a lure. Our local vfw is on the downfall due to lack of interest from the younger generation.

That lack of interest is unfortunate, but common. Part of the problem is that nobody is inviting these younger vets into the organization. I remember when I was a "younger vet"; and the only people that invited me in were the ones that wanted me to do something, some job or task or project. No one asked me to join just simply for the camaraderie. Years later that changed, but people today don't realize that the vast majority of vets alive today are under the age of 40. And trust me, 40 is a spring chicken compared with a lot of us old warhorses. But none the less, shooting bridges the gap. No matter what the age, as long as nobody is shooting back at you, shooting can be enjoyed by a great number of vets and their families. Please step up and lend a hand.
