General OC questions

If OC is legal where you live, do you have to carry in an OC holster or could you use an IWB holster? Do OWB holsters come with some sort of retention/locking mechanism to prevent somebody from grabbing the gun if they approached from the rear, such as while in line at the grocery store? Just curious.

I've never heard of an OC holster. If you plan on OCing I'd suggest you get some retention traning. Any type of retention holster can be defeated. Retention is your responsibility, not the holsters.

My bad. I meant to ask if you could OC with an IWB or if it had to be OWB. LCDR answered. Thank you both.

Many OWB holsters do come with a retention system, although those do not stop somebody from grabbing your gun. I would recommend a level 2 Serpa holster for open carry. It makes it more difficult for a person to remove your gun from your holster, but it will not stop them. Only you and your brain can do that.

Retention holsters merely buy you a few extra seconds to gain control of your gun and attack your attacker before they get it out of the holster.

Owb for me. currently in a level 2 fobus. Thinking about going to a level 1 high ride kydex holster like the raven concealment. I'm going to rely on situational awareness and a knife if they go for my gun...but those are as rare as oc'rs being targeted in the first place.

I use OWB retention holder for OC and OWB open holster for concealed carry.

Now that winter is approaching ill be more inclined to use my shoulder holster for CC.

Whether you OC or CC, if you are so unaware of your surroundings that you allow someone to get that close to you and your gun, then the kind of holster you use won't really matter and won't do anything to improve your chances of surviving a potential gun grab. That being said, a holster with a thumb break at the very least should suffice for everyday OC.

Normally the only legal requirement for OC where it is legal is that the weapon be visible from 3 directions, front back and one side.

And you may not shield it with your hand or arm.

Whatever kind of holster you use with it is not mentioned in the law.

For those of us living in the CCCP of California, this becomes relevant when we visit Nevada or Utah.

Arizona allows anyone resident or nonresident to CCW or OC with no restrictions of any kind, other than you must be law abiding with no felonies on your record. So when visiting Arizona it is not an issue at all.

Never head of the visible from 3 directions or that your arm/hand can not cover it. Any links or information to explain where you got that information?

When I open carry at the 3 oclock, with my arms down like a normal person and not walking around like a zombie, chances are you will only be able to see if from front or back if you are looking for it. Never had an LEO tell me my arm was covering it, or that it wasn't visible from 3 sides, or any of that bologna.

Head butting is also a horrible idea, hitting your head against another hard object and trying to keep your wits sounds ridiculous.

It can also depend on the cop. Law is always open to something called 'interpretation' and the averwge DA will waste as much taxpayer money as he can to win.

Post filled with 100% B.S., as usual.

Not allowed to cover the gun with your arm? Never heard of that one! Personally, I feel that doing that is the best form of retention, and for the law to say that you can't would be ridiculous ( but then again, lawmakers make ridiculous laws with ridiculous caveats all the time, so if such a caveat did exist, I wouldn't be surprised at all). But, why stop there? Open carriers also shouldn't be allowed to wear clothing that matches the color of the gun, nor should the side that their gun is in be the side that is facing away from the street when they are walking on a public sidewalk. I have more, but you guys get the idea.
