I know there is a similar thread on this, but I didn't want to hijack the thread since my problem isn't with jamming.
I'm not even sure if it is a problem at all yet.
I have a brand new 4 Gen Glock 22 that I bought last week. I've only put 50 rounds through it so far. In the process of removing the slide last night, I noticed that the end of the recoil spring(the end that you can see while the gun is completely assembled, underneath the barrel) wasn't sitting flush with the opening.
So, when I attempted to remove the spring, the black piece on the end was catching on the outside edge of the slide, preventing me from pulling it out. When looking at it you could clearly see that it wasn't centered in it either, leaving a small opening, or space, in the whole. The only thing we were able to do was remove the barrel from underneath the recoil spring so that we can pull the spring down, at an angle, and remove it.
Just FYI, there was a glock armorer present, and he had never seen this before.
So, we completely reassembled the slide. The recoil spring was inserted properly into the "business" end, and also into the second notch on the barrel. At this time, the "business" end of the recoil spring was sitting flush with the opening. However, as soon as it was racked back and released, the little black end of the spring went back through the hole.
I'm wondering if this is a problem? Is this normal?
I, and a bunch of other officers, have done a bunch of dry fires and simple racking to test it since. I've had the recoil and barrel just fall out as soon as the slide was off, even after ensuring the parts were inserted correctly. I've opened it up and found the little lip on the "business" end of the spring was keeping tension off the spring completely so that it wasn't even touching on the other side. I've taken the slide off and found the spring was either off-center in the lower groove, and i've even had it completely off the grooves, nearly to the wall of the slide.
I'm not really sure what to think about this. No one has seen or heard of this before. To me, it seems like there should be a small metal washer that prevents the end of the recoil spring from shoving itself through the front of the slide in this manner, but I dunno.
My biggest worry at the moment is that it will FTF or FTE. The crappy thing is that I have qualification tomorrow.
