I have a Ruger SR40C,the clip I use when I carry holds 9 rounds.I keep it filled with 9.How long can I keep it full before the spring will weaken, and possible not load the last round?

Someone is going to accuse you of loading potato chips into your weapon when you say "clip". LOL... I have never heard of a spring in a "magazine" getting so weak it will not load the last round.

Ummm...before someone less kind comments on your post, you might want to change "clip" to "magazine." I will grant you, it sounds way cooler, but a clip is used for belt or gravity-fed weapon. And the answer is that your spring will never wear out.

Magazine springs wear out from cycling not from remaining in a static position (either compressed or relaxed). they're also not all that exspenive to replace. I have a couple of magazines that have been loaded continously for years and they still work just fine.

Sweet! Ruger came out with a 9 shot revolver! The cylinder should rotate as long as you either squeeze the trigger or cock the hammer. Springs normally take 1000s' of rounds before they wear out. Hope you're enjoying your new revolver.

(scratching head) Say What?

How is this a revolver?

I don't know if it's true that a 'fully loaded' clip will weaken the spring, but I always keep the final space empty from all of my magazines 'just in case' it may be true.

I have owned magazines that ive kept fully loaded for ten to fifteen years now, with no spring weakening, and no failures to feed right up to the follower.

I'm sure the OP has a revolver, as the semi-auto pistol in the photo you posted uses "magazines". A "clip" is commonly used in a revolver, unless Ruger has developed a M-1 style semi-auto pistol.

As others have posted, use the proper terminology to avoid confusion.

Metallic springs wear out from exercise. That is, from being flexed over and over.

A Metallic spring will NEVER wear out from being left in compression. EVER

Some people just don't learn. Then there are those that are not capable of learning.

Guys Are confusing me butI whatever. Can springs where it out. Yes. Is it common in handguns. No. Only springs I have had where out was my m4 mags in an inconvenience place. But those came from the lowest bidder. Should 1 worry about it and handguns not so much. Last handgun mags I've seen mess up was from a luger from ww 2. U go to the range ever so offtin it cycles fine u r good. It doesn't well time to get a new 1. U buy quality stuff no worries .

really are we serious on this one?

The springs do not get weak because they are loaded to full capacity. No the SR9 is not a revolver ( hehe that was funny).

and dude...clips are for hair, magazines are for semi-autos...hehe had to say it.

so relax the springs are ok..you should always test your carry gun often so you know that it is working fine, I have had students come to class with guns that have been in storage for years ( CHL renewals) and they are dirty and some even have a bit of rust inside, they still work... I got a guy that had a German luger and he qualified with that, when I was picking up the brass, some of the ammunition was in German with a 43 on them so I'm guessing that the ammunition was form 1943. That was interesting I kept one of the casings. I have never seen any other gun or ammo like that. But again I had one person try to qualify with a SW 500 revolver.

so you should be fine with loading your magazines to full capacity...also get some extra magazines. I have at least 6 magazines for each gun and max 10 magazines...(I know some people think I'm nuts to keep that many, but one day the magazines for that model are not going to be made and then they are going to be worth some $$$)

Clips don't have springs. Magazines do. Clips don't encase rounds like magazines do. They just hold the rounds to feed rifle internal magazines.

Also. I leave my duty magazines fully loaded and have never had a problem with any of them. Yes, springs wear out but from the compression and decompression functioning. Not being compressed for periods of time.

Pistols that shoot automatic rounds like the .45 acp have a clip that the rounds slip into to hold them in place on the cylinder. Thats the pistol vs revolver joke.

A M-1 Garand clip encases the rounds. :-)

I agree proper terminology is better, but was anyone really confused?

Are you taking about the OP?

Say what? I think proper spelling and grammar would be of more benefit than terminology.
