Free glock

I just was notified that during "Glock Days" that I have won a brand new Glock.

If it is a 9mm, .40, or .357 it is free, otherwise I pay the difference. They said it would be between $35-$45 in case I wanted a .45 or a longslide.

I used to have a G23 and got rid of it for a G22.

The only pistol ammunition that I own is .22 LR, .22 WMR, .380, .38 sp, and .40

Any suggestion which model you would get (if you were in my shoes) taking the above information into account?

Please give your reasons. Thanks in advance.

Wow! Congratulations!

What do you already have? And are you looking for a caliber you already use to simplify ammo buying, or do you want more alternatives (or are you looking for a debate on that? )? You know I'm not in to Glocks myself, but that might help for other suggestions...

Nice! I'm envious. My choice if I were in your shoes would be to pay the difference and get what I want, that being a G4 G20/29. Why not add a 10mm to your collection? Excellent round and flat shooting and ammo is easier than some to come by albeit a little more expensive but not by much. Winchester Super X Silvertips, Double Tap, Underwood ammo and Buffalo Bore make the standard high power rounds like the 10 was meant to be.

Congrats Wolf!!! I have a G23 and like it! If I had won it I would have a very hard time picking which one I would take. I really do not know what I would get. I believe I would go to where I get most of my ammo and see what was the most available now. But you should take your time and get what you would really want!

9mm longslide range/target pistol. I'm assuming you carry the .380 .38 or .40?

Ammo is cheap and what's another caliber since you have 4 already?

I have an XD-S .45 carry sidearm, and FMJ target ammo is expensive, and carry ammo prices make me cry. It beats me up if I shoot two or more boxes of WWB in one session (very rare).

I shoot my XDm 9mm 4.5 more than my .45. Lots more. Fun range/target gun and cheap ammo. Could carry it if my hidden hybrid holster would ever show up.

Your choice. Congrats. Envious here as well.

Pistols: we have a G22 (.40 cal, full size), a sig P238 (.380), a G42 (.380), and a S&W 637 CT (.38 snubbie)

I'm torn on whether to get yet another caliber.

Basically, just looking for others opinions on what they'd get and why.

Thanks for the congrats.

EDIT: I forgot to mention my Taurus 992 (interchangeable cylinders... one is .22 LR; the other .22 WMR)

Oh, and before someone asks, the G18 was not an option for the give-a-way... lol. I asked and was shut down. (fully automatic 9mm)

Congratulations, nothing like winning a gun to put a smile on your face. I don't own any Glocks but my son and best friend have them in both 9 and 40 as I do with my Sig's. I agree with r1derbike, get a 9 as practice ammo can be found at reasonable prices, it's softer shooting allowing for longer sessions, and with high end self defense ammo quite effective and more rounds in the stack to boot. Let us know what you choose and post a picture when you get it.

That definitely has crossed my radar. I generally carry the G22, but on deeper conceal days, just the G42. Sometimes, both if I'm feeling ornery.

.45 I have had in mind, but I keep looking at ammo prices for them and cringe.

Yet, with the Reserves, I'm able to carry a .45 and I'm told they are better to shoot than the .40. My .40 is also my duty weapon.

Thanks.

I've gotten some good advice on these forums in the past, and was hoping for the same again here. I'm still flummoxed as to what I want... well I want all of them, but realistically, what I'd choose.

I totally agree. The Glock 20 and 29, both Gen 4, are on my list. The Glock 20 Gen 4 would be first. I like the capacity of Glocks and the fire power of 10mm. You can get a conversion barrel and shoot .40 S&W with it. There are other conversion barrels for .356 Sig, 9x25, and .38 Super.

My next purchase, and first Glock, is going to be the Gen 4 G21SF in FDE. I am looking forward to it. Waiting for Mama to give me the green light on the purchase. So, that's what I'd pick, were I so lucky as to be in your shoes.

I personally dislike the .40 S&W. In my experience (Smith Sigma, P226, and G22) the rounds has almost the muzzle jump and recoil of a .45 with marginally better ballistics over a 9mm. If you look up the ballistics from most reputable manufacturers, I feel the 9mm 124gr +P offers enough energy, flat trajectory, more ammo capacity, and an easier carry than a .40 or .45. If I were personally going to carry another caliber I'd go .45 all the way! Congrats on winning the gun and I hope you get the opinions to help you make your choice.

What I would do isn't necessarily what you should do.

I like my G30 so I would pick another G30 or it's Big Brother the G21.

I wanted to say thanks to all who offered their advice and opinions.

I have made a decision through interacting with you folks, some other gun owners I have respect for and of course my partner in life, my wife.

I have decided on the Gen 4 G17.

I'm going to give my thought process as an example for others and not as a rule. This worked for me in my situation.

I have a G22 now with Truglo TFO (green/yellow) sights. I volunteer in the Reserve division of our Sheriff. This is my duty gun. It is in .40. I carry this personally 95% of the time. Sometimes I carry the G42 for the sheer convenience of such a smaller gun.

I have many .40 rounds in my collection and really thought about getting the longslide G35. The reason I went against it, I know it would turn into a safe queen. It would be a bit harder to conceal than the G22 and it has the same amount of rounds since it uses the exact same magazine.

Then I thought about getting a .45. I would have gotten the G21 because of my large hands. I have shot the G21 and the G30 and prefer the size of the G21. Then I looked online at ammo prices.

Yikes!! Even though I could use the G21 as a duty weapon, I really pondered as to whether I wanted to get into yet another expensive handgun caliber.

This is what clinched it for me. I decided on the G17. Reasons: It is the same frame and trigger mechanism as my G22. Therefore, practicing with it, will be just like practicing with the G22 with the exception of the recoil. However, the prices of 9mm ammunition are considerably less than the .40 and they are easy to find even in today's market. I will be able to practice more for less money.

I have also ordered a set of Truglo TFO's (green/yellow) for this model so that it will have the same sight acquisition/s ight picture as my G22.

Only time will tell as to which I carry more. I'll probably follow up with a post. When it comes in, I'll provide pictures.

Once again, thank you to all who posted.

Glad I read all your posts before I offered my $.02. I would have gone with the G17 primarily for the reasons you posted.
The main reason being is 9mm is easy to come by and still reasonable. That G17 is as fast as you are and I think you will appreciate fast follow up shots with the 9mm. Good luck and let us know about the follow up shots and an overall review of your new gun.

If you like the 45acp how about a Springfield XDS 4" or even in 9mm. Great pocket guns. A new one, well sort of new anyway, is Lionheart (used to be Daewoo) Industries LH9C compact which is kind of modeled after the old S&W model 39. You have a myriad of mfr's from all over the world like H&K, Sig Sauer, CZ, Colt, Ruger, EAA/Sarsilmaz, Taurus, Bersa, Beretta, Walther and I could continue on. I think your question is too open ended and you need to narrow down what it's main use will be and caliber you desire. I think anyone that has multiple guns in their collection should always have a good revolver or two in it so maybe that could be your next firearm. Ruger makes great firearms both single action and double action that really stand up to abuse. Take a look at their SP101 and GP100 series for 357/38 or if you prefer lighter the LCR series. I always thought the SP101 in 327 Federal would make a neat little carry gun and it can fire 4 other 32 cal rounds as well. Maybe you want a 44 mag/44 spcl then the Redhawk or Super Redhawk. S&W also has revolvers in 357 or 44 with barrels that range from 2-9'' as does Taurus. Good luck in your search.

I'd take the 10mm so it could go into the woods with me....It would take care of the black bears we have around here.....
