HB 255 would allow firearms owners to sue their insurance company in cases in which the insurer charges discriminatory rates based on firearms ownership. While such a practice is already illegal under Florida law, only the office of insurance regulation has authority to actually ENFORCE it. It was noted in the article that Florida hasn't seen this problem yet, but it has become an issue in some other states and they want to stay ahead of the curve. The law would only apply to discriminatory increases in premiums, "nor would they face state scrutiny if they lowered rates for a gun owner based on an actuarial determination that gun ownership reduced the risk of burglaries."

One opponent of the bill observed that Florida law allows insurers to exclude Doberman Pinschers and Rottweilers, so “If an insurance company wants to exclude assault-type weapons, it seems to me that it is good to exclude if they desire to.” Of course, the main difference between certain breeds of dogs and military style semi automatic rifles is that the rifle isn't going to have a bad day and attack someone entirely on its own, unlike some breeds of dogs have done, so that argument is moot.

I have sent a modified version of the bill to the state senator from my district, so as to cover not only individuals but businesses as well as that wish to have their employees and customers carry on their premises.

My home insurance excludes GSD's, Pit Bulls, Rottweiler's and Dobermans from new policies but will cover dogs you have had all along. They covered my new GSD based on a 30 year history of owning a GSD without an incident.

How does gun ownership reduced the risk of burglaries? Don't most burglars try to enter when no one is home, and try to steal the firearms if they think there are any on the premises?

I guess if you had a sign outside that said "gun owner who is usually home" it might help.

I think if they know the gun is in the house it could possibly increase daytime burglaries but would reduce night burglars and forced entry robberies. Provided of course that Flaco, the thieving 110 pound crack-smoking, heroin dealing, tweeking meth-head even knows what planet he's on. Guns aren't a deterrent to people who don't know what planet they're on.
