flash-bang

I recently found a 12ga short flash-bang round at the Washington Arms Collectors gun show. The round is about 1/2 inch long and works fine in a Marine Signal flare gun. Upon launch the gun has a slight recoil and a ball of bright flash ignites about three feet out. The bang is extremely loud, I got an echo back from an island about 3/4 miles away.

I keep it loaded near my bed in the event someone is in the wrong place at my discretion they will be blinded for awhile, deaf for a little longer and have an immediate laundry issue. If they are in my house it will be their only chance to survive and take flight or face deep hot punctuation from my other bedside buddy. Outside prowlers can be deterred without violating their civil rights or endangering my neighbors.

BTW this flash-bang costs about a buck each and is often carried by dealers of the the exotic rounds.

Why bother with a novelty round that will have the same affect to the shooter as the shootee. You discharge that round in your house you will be blinded, deaf and may have just given the BG all the opportunity to wreak havoc on you. If they are in your house and you feel threatened, use a real shotgun round and end the chance for you becoming a statistic. I've shot in the dark in confined spaces...you looses your night vision and you can't hear much after the first round so you don't know if someone else is nearby or the BG has scurried to cover to the right or left.

My intent was to offer an alternative to cutting someone to pieces and wrecking your house. If you know what to expect with a flashbang you wont be terribly debillitated, fire several rounds to practice while your senses respond . The idea is to gain control in the event the intruder is some senile old person looking for a familiar place, a young kid looking for a quick buck or even the most ingenious of cat burglars looking to rip you off without confrontations.

Believe me, no doctrine or law will make you be OK with killing someone. If you have to kill you want to be sure that was you last choice and you had to do it.

I would shoot to kill an imminent threat inside my home without prejudice before I'd rip off a flash bang that could burn my damn house down with everyone in it. No one should ever feel good about killing someone but when a human is faced with a deadly threat face to face, you'd be surprised how easy it is to squeeze the trigger. The castle doctrine DOES make me feel ok using deadly force in my home I'd like to point out. It's the reason its been a law in so many States so homeowners can protect themselves and property with the backing of law.

Real flashbangs are meant to be used only on their intended target, the police don't run into a room and throw them at their feet do they? They are meant to cause surprise and confusion for just a few seconds to allow the police or military to take immediate, and generally lethal action against the people they just used said flash bangs on. They are not meant to be held in a hand and discharged in a room so they affect the user as much as the usee, it's an offensive weapon not a defensive one. If you want to give the badguy a warning shot that's your perogative but you might as well just have a buckshot round loaded (or rubber or beanbag rounds if you really feel that strongly about not killing), put the first one at his feet or past his ear and it will be just as intimidating as that 'flashbang' believe me. Though I'd recommend the first one be center mass personally. Secondly, it sounds like this round is a high powered blank, even a low powered blank can be lethal at close range, just ask Brandon Lee, oh wait, you can't.

I do understand the tactical flash-bang as used by law enforcement. I was part of one of the first applications in San Diego, CA in 1963 when we (military police) provided the SDPD with a brand new device, Distraction Grenade, to gain an advantage over a hostage sit in a drug store. Years past before I saw this applied again but its effectiveness is legend today. A 12ga flash-bang is a method application that can give you a chance to control a situation that may be no more than a senile neighbor or your own teen child sneaking in after a secret date. Applied Deadly force cannot be recalled. That first round may be found in your next-door neighbors bedroom. I only suggest a method to give you a split second to reevaluate your target and perhaps not change your life forever. Second guesses will follow you to the grave, I know!

I was kinda thinking the same thing when I read this. The consequences of a flash bang go both ways. Law enforcement and military who use flash bangs do not enter the room until after the flash bang has gone off, and for good reason.

This is a 12ga round that projects a charge about three feet from the muzzle and then it does the flash/bang. I've fired several in practice, though it is uncomfortable I was in no way disabled and could continue to react normally, the surprise factor would be momentarily disabling to the intruder giving me the opportunity control the situation without deadly force.
One situation that I've considered is to deter a car prowl or window peeper.

So is it still burning when it hits the ground? Are there fragments from the bang? Are they burning when they hit the ground?

no it is not 'burning' and it does not hit the ground, the charge is expelled from the gun and detonates in the air about three feet from the muzzle. you can aim at the ground if you want a 'friendly' warning or at the groin or face depending how you evaluate the threat.
