First time CCW suggestion?

I haven't shot any of the guns you're thinking of, but I've handled the Sig Sauer P290 and I can tell you it will hurt to shoot. It's just so dang small and light that your hands are going to take a beating.

I carry a Walther PK .380--it's considered a full size gun, but it's pretty small. It's very smooth to operate and the recoil is light. It's quite a small caliber for personal defense, though.

Thanks for the warning! I'm looking to carry a 9mm or .45 because I can buy HST ammo, they are probably the most effective manstoppers for their size. Although, I do know someone who has a walther... maybe he'll let me try that out :)

The M&P's are some of the softest shooting sidearms on the market. My wife carries a M&P 9c

Get your hands on as many guns as you can. Get a feel for something. Most everything out on the market works now. Once you find one that feels good see if a local range has a rental that you can test out. Or even a friend.

For colder weather I have a S&W 9mm M&P that I carry. For the warmer weather, I carry a Ruger .380 LCP. It just depends on how heavy you can stand your pistol on your hip...the 9mm is quite heavy compared to my .380. I love going to the range and shooting all in my arsenal.....

9mm....40....357 mag... .22 Ruger... .22revolver... .22 derringer... And my AWESOME .380 Ruger LCP. (and my son's .22rifle)

My son is telling me what he wants us to get next...(and he is only 7 1/2)

Just shoot a variety, and you will find "your special" piece.

I'm by no means an expert. In fact I'm very new to all of this so all I've got to offer is my .02 worth of information. I've a Flashbang for my S&W638---love it!!! However I also have bought several 1911s that I want to carry and just recently bought a Glock 23 that I've been wanting leather for. What I've determined is that I think I want a holster with dual carry options that include cant. I'm focusing on the Glock right now because I've got a Kangaroo canvas style shoulder rig for the 1911s that I like. Not in love with it yet but liking a lot.
As far as guns are concerned I tend to fall in love with 1911s but I got the Glock because I don't care it it get beat up with every day carry incidents. I'm soon going to purchase a Colt New Agent and with it the Marilyn holster from the Flashbang people. I like my .45s! What can I say? DO NOT carry a gun you don't enjoy shooting!!! You need lots of practice to be proficient with it and if you don't like it you won't want to shoot it. I almost forgot I also have a Kahr P9. Don't like it at all. I've got some elbow issues and it hurts to shoot more than 2 mags. However, I think maybe another Kahr will be in my future. Of course in .45 this time but I want to rent one first.
Hope I haven't overloaded you. Like I said this is where I am and you have to work through some of this stuff for yourself because what works for one may not for you.

Oooh. Me likey.

I just bought the M&P9C haven't shot it yet but I bought it on all the reviews that it was a soft recoil. I have ordered a White Hat inside the waist holster and it should be here any day. I carry a Ruger LCR in a Crossbreed IWB holster and it feels very comfortable. Because of the spread of the clips it spreads the weight of the gun out over the belt and doesn't just pull down on one place. My LCR is very comfortable and I can forget I have it on. I carry it just in front of my right hip as it conceals better there. The White Hat and Crossbreed are about the same but I liked the brown leather on the White Hat and it shipped within about 3 weeks. I shot my instructors Glock 9 but didn't like how it felt. The M&P just fits my hand better and with the three grip back straps that come with it you should be able to get a really good grip.

My wife carries a colt combat commander year around, she likes the feel and stopping power. Carry a gun that fits your hand and you are can handle year around.

The M&P is looking like it might be the winner for me. Still have to shoot a few more to be sure though. I handled a taurus the other day that I really liked so I'll have to try that out to. Thanks for all the suggestions!

As another first time CCW this was a great thread to see which guns to try next. Its hard where I am now as there is only one range and its small with limited selection but Im thinking a trip a few hours away to try out some of the suggested above is in order. Ive shot a rifle for years in the military but only have gotten into handguns recently. I love the XD 45 but husband bought a XD 40 and my shot groups are just not the same. Obviously its a bit too big to conceal too living in a climate of shorts and t-shirts. Good to see so many woman carry!

Very good choice, in fact we went looking for one yesterday and could not find a compact, I wanted a 40, but the guy at the gun shop gave me a smokin deal on a G-27, I had one a while back, shoots great but being that its small in size and shoots a 40, to be good with it takes a bit of practice, but the M&P compact is a very smooth shooter, don't know about a bra holster its still a little big, in a previous post I said all the small light 380s and 9mms are snappy, but if you wanted in addition to the M&P a small 380 would be a option when carry concealed is a priority, they are not comfortable to shoot at all, but they do conceal great, for this purpose i would suggest the Taurus TCP or the Ruger LCP, and we do have two small 22 mag revolvers they about look like belt buckle guns, but they are tiny, and the 22mag rd really barks

You might look into a sholder carry hand bag that has a gun compartment that lets you keep it concealed as well as available quickly enough.

Jessica, I own a Glock 19 gen3 9mm and It shoots very smoothly, it has approx 1000r rds thru it and it softened up quite a bit...also very easy to pull slide...I also have a G36 gen4 .45, Not to bad to shoot, very accurate, very manageable recoil, but only 6+1 capacity versus my 19 at 10+1...NYS law. I use the same holster for both guns. A supertuck orig. for the 19, But the 36 fits well too. Out of the two I really enjoy shooting the 36....I can shoot 150 rnds no problem and I am thin. The 36 is also slightly smaller than the 19, mostly in the handle and the width...of the frame, its also bevelled in the front around the barrell for easy holstering.

I thought about that idea for about 5 seconds and dismissed it because I actually hate carrying purses. They are bulky, full of junk, and if stolen... well there goes the gun too. However, I know a few people who this option works great for.

I've discovered another problem I'm hoping you ladies and/or guys can help me with. When I was carrying the Kahr I used a "be-yonk-e" (not sure how its spelled) gun leather holster. I typically wore it with jeans or shorts that ride more on the mid- to low-hip and I always used a belt. Ever single time I bent over, sat down, or basically moved my waist in any direction other then looking like I had a rod up my a$$. my shirts would either catch on the grip or expose the gun completly. Yes this happens even in big baggy shirts. Needless to say this makes it really hard to keep a concealed weapon hidden. What am I doing wrong or is it the type of holster that's the issue?

I carry either an LCR or a Smith and Wesson 9mm compact. Both in Cross Breed type holsters. I carry a little forward of the hip in appendix position and it helps conceal. I also change the angle of the holster to have the gun riding low with the grip pointed down toward my hip. It conceals great and its easy to draw. The weight of the 9mm is distrubted across the double clips so it rides very well. I did have to trim some of the bottom of the holster as it was uncomfortable when sitting but it being leather its easy to customize. I don't know if your holster has the ability to change angles (I don't believe it does) but try different positions than just the on the hip position.
