Firearm Safety/Accident

This thread brings up an interesting side point.

A lot of times on this forum, people say guns are tools, and should be treated as such. People shouldn't be afraid of them, we should be able to open carry, regulations should be relaxed. But in this case, and in others, when the discussion turns to drinking, suddenly a gun is a deadly weapon, and often equated with vehicles and drinking and driving.

So which is it? Because I'd let someone use a screwdriver while drinking....

you must be talking about vodka and orange juice(also a screwdriver):haha: because i still can barely trust sober people with a screw driver or a screw gun... maybe i just know some dumb people. it seems to be a disease lately. (irresponsibility). not calling you dumb by the way.. i dont know you. just making a joke.

Yeah, but would you let someone use a power saw while drinking?

A friend came over to watch a football game. His wife dropped him off because she wanted to go shopping and his car is in the shop for repairs. We start drinking during the pre-game show. At halftime he ask to borrow my car to go to the store and get some pastrami for a sandwich (I only have turkey in the house and he wants red meat.) I throw him my keys and say "the deli on Main Street has great pastrami."

On his way to the deli he drives into a telephone pole and dies.

Should I be prohibited from owning a car?

yeah you should be prohibited from owning a car. you don't let friends drink and drive... I'm sorry if my opinion offends you no gods. i don't want to offend. its just my opinion sir. Alcohol+firearms+any machinery= irresponsible. If you want to drink, put your gun in your safe (unloaded) LOCK IT with your car keys in it. I guess my wife and I are the only ones that like to stay home, drink a limit of 4 shots of tequila, and play video games because television sucks. Many good people die from drinking and driving. In fact, My wife's uncle "drunk ass" shot through his foot, loosing the 3 little toes, with his AR-15 just playing with it not realizing it was loaded. He's still a drunk till this day and can barely walk.

And as others have pointed out, if you have to use your firearm after you have had a beer or 2, it's just one more thing law can use AGAINST you.

Anyone out of popcorn yet?
sorry now i'm just being an ass. but this is a sensitive subject for quite a few people who have lost children to drunk driving.

A firearm is a tool. Like many other tools, it can be used as a weapon (baseball bat). A weapon is any object used to commit violence against someone (a rolled-up magazine as a bludgeon). I think the most important part of this topic is responsibility. When people are irresponsible, bad things happen. When you add intoxicants, you add to the potential of irresponsible behavior and poor judgement.

You know, as I was posting that, I was thinking about it. If I liked them, then no. If I didn't, sure. Nothing like loosing a couple fingers to teach someone a lesson. It's a little different, though, because (hopefully) it's only THEIR fingers they're going to chop off.

Honestly, I'm not sure where I stand on the issue. I know *I'm* responsible enough to carry a weapon even if I'm drinking, but by most accounts, the other guy sure isn't.

I also *do* think that guns are inherently more dangerous than other tools. It's amusing how people scramble to deny that the prime purpose of a firearm is and always has been to kill other human beings.

Like most every other firearms-related issue we talk about here, close examination reveals that the issue isn't the weapon or the circumstances, but the nature of the individuals involved. It seems nothing can change the true nature of a person, whether they are responsible or careless, selfish or thoughtful.

And then again, sometimes stuff just happens.

Every CDL holder is held to a higher standard than those with regular Driver's Licenses. Why shouldn't licensed gun owners who should know better.? <.040% BAC = off the road for 24 hours. >.040% BAC = big troubles for CDL holder including loss of license for 1 year for first offense.. Even if in a non-CDL required vehicle.

Florida DHMVS CDL Handbook said:
You will lose your CDL for at least one year for a
first offense for:
• Driving a CMV if your breath or blood alcohol
concentration is .04 or higher.
• Driving your personal vehicle or CMV under the
influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.

I wouldnt say the gun or the car become deadly weapons once alcohol is introduced. I would argue the potential of them turning into deadly weapons (usually unintentionally) increases significantly when the person is under the influence of a depressant.

Im not afraid of the gun or the car when alcohol is introduced, I am afraid of the person who is turning off their central nervous system and losing their critical thinking skills while in possession of things that need our full thinking capacity to use safely.

I'm not the not the one that was driving while drunk.

So what if he came over in his car and then used his car at halftime to go get some pastrami? I'm still letting a friend drive drunk, I'm just not letting him drive my car. Should I still be prohibited from owning a car because of my passive participation in his death?

Now it doesn't have anything to do with the original post. This is how the story would have to go now.

"Friend brought his own gun over, drank some beer and ended up shooting and killing himself with his own gun."

If the story did go like that, then no, the owner of the property should not have any punishment what so ever. Right?
Other wise if you enable someone to do something not so intelligent like using your firearm under the influence, then you have ENABLED them in doing something not so intelligent, and are now partly responsible.

I see your point of not being responsible for others dumb actions but the guy should have never let the inexperienced person handle a firearm, especially while drinking alcohol. now the firearm owner has performed a dumb action as well. Just my opinion. I hope it makes sense. Peace!

p.s. i really don't let anyone borrow my car for any reason. not even my best friends. I might be a a-hole to them but I'm a naturally paranoid person and think of all the consequences for my actions. I would hate for someone to wreck my car... i would be out of a car, even though i have full coverage, it does not cover my friend driving my car (unless it's an emergency situation or i'm in the car with them). That's usually the reason I tell people if they do ask to borrow my car. And gas is too damn expensive. lol. any way peace!
