Hello Everybody. This is going to sound like a novice question, because it is. I am relatively new to the world of handguns. I have experience with rifles but I have never owned a handgun. What do I have to do in order to purchase one and is there a website that can give me all of that information so that I am legal and prepared as a responsible citizen with a license to carry? With whom do I inquire about getting a license to carry? I am a resident of South Carolina but I work in Georgia. Do I need to get a license in both states to carry a concealed weapon? Thanks.

You can buy a handgun from anywhere...but if you buy it from out of state, it has to be transferred to an FFL (Federal Firearms Licensee, usually a gun shop) in the buyer's state, before it can be transferred to the buyer.

Consult the carry maps on the home page - but off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure that SC and GA do not honor each other's permits.

Hi Tom, I'm not familiar with South Carolina's laws, but usually you have to take a CCW (concealed carry weapon) class in order to carry one legally. They're offered by many gun shops. Georgia may or may not have a reciprocity deal with South Carolina. If they do, you can carry in both states. As far as purchasing a gun, usually you have to obtain a authorization from a local police department. Then take that to a gun shop. You'll then return the form with purchase information and register it with the police. Hope this helps!

Welcome, to the site. On the sc-ga reciprocity you will need to look into another states non-res (sc & ga do not accept each others permits) try fl non-res as it seems to be the best bet for the money.

This is sc's official site and will giv you all the info needed and a list of classes in your area. Also expect to wait the full 90 days or at least most of it before the cwp will get back to you. Be safe and happy shooting.

You are absolutely correct. You are not familiar with South Carolina gun laws. Nor the gun laws of MOST states in America. It is the EXCEPTION, NOT usually that a person has to obtain authorization from local police to purchase a handgun. It is the EXCEPTION, NOT usually that you must register handguns with police. Only 3 or 4 states have any of those rules in place and South Carolina is not one of them.

As a South Carolina resident, the OP could purchase a handgun from another South Carolina resident in a private sale by handing the money over, receiving the gun, shake hands, say Thank You, and walk away. No permit, no registration required.

As a South Carolina resident, the OP could walk into a gun shop in Soutch Carolina, fill out the Federal form 4473, wait a few minutes for the instant background check, walk out of the store with the handgun, no permit, no registration required.

As a South Carlonia resident, the OP could purchase a handgun in Georgia, have the seller ship or deliver that handgun to a South Carolina FFL (licensed dealer), and at the South Carolina FFL receive the handgun just like he purchased it from that dealer above.

Very few states have permits required to purchase and even fewer have registration.

Great questions!! Too many people just go out and get a gun and think they are legal under the Constitution but haven't checked out their own state laws. Here is a link to the SC's attorney general. This website will let you know reciprocity between SC and other states and you will find the law for SC. Link Removed

Also, remember to check other states laws out to make sure that you know how to handle yourself appropriately in that state. For example: I live in PA and have a permit in PA. It however, doesn't have reciprocity with my next door neighbor OH. So, I got a UT permit that gave me reciprocity with OH. In PA, if pulled over by a cop, I am under no obligation to tell him I am carrying, yet in OH that is the first thing I must tell him. Also, in OH I may not carry, under their law, in any restaurant serving alcohol.

I would start with this site and check each states' reciprocities and rules and I would buy this book: Traveler's Guide to the Firearms Laws of the Fifty States

Ignorance of the law is no excuse... a popular phrase among law enforcement.

I appreciate all of your responses and will be checking out all of the websites and information you have presented so that I can gather all of the correct information. Thank you very much. I am also going to sign up with a local class for which I am sure I will find out much more. Thanks for all of your help. I truly appreciate that.

Wolf_fire "Also, in OH I may not carry, under their law, in any restaurant serving alcohol."

Just information for our neighbor to the east, that law has been changed in 2012 and you may now carry concealed into a restaurant that serves alcohol. Exception would be if restaurant etc. has a no guns policy posted at the door. BUT, you cannot partake of the spirituous liquids.
