Fight breaks out and officer lets it continue

Good Afternoon,

Saw this video and I was just wondering if this is proper procedure. I have to admit my sound is muted but I watched the entire video.

LINK TO VIDEO HERE (Officer first appears at 22 seconds)

Long version:
Basically an individual gets into an argument with a group and that individual becomes physical first. He is then jumped by the entire group and gets the living crap beaten out of him. An officers comes by and appears to radio for back up but then instead of getting involved just stands to the side and lets the individual get pounded on by the entire group. I know that the individual started the altercation but why didn't the officer break it up!? I can't help but feel like that officer does nothing except further reinforce the fact that police are just there to clean up the mess. You are the only one responsible for your own safety.

Short version:
A guy starts a fight with a group of people and gets his butt whooped while an officer just stands there and watches waiting for backup.

Just looking for some opinions on this!

Officer safety rule number 1: Don't jump into a group of people fighting.

If you were a cop, would you go take on a group of people by yourself? If you would, you wouldnt last a day in the job.

I agree with DesertEagle.

Also, I watched this video three times trying to focus on the belt of the person in the black uniform. Are you sure he is LE? I can't really tell.

Also, when he tries to break it up, 15 or so people swarm around him and he withdraws (smart move)... it would have been smarter if he hadn't tried to break it up by himself in the first place.

Now... what can one person do against several? A taser wouldn't work on multiple people (I didn't see a taser on his belt). Pepper spray is great against many people, oh shoot... there were so many others that were innocent. Well pepper spray is out of the question too. Can't use his gun? (Did you see a gun on the person in the black uniform? I couldn't. I'm wondering if he was EMT. Again, I cannot tell from the video.

Long story short, if the person in the black uniform is LE, then he should've radioed for backup and waited. He has one primary duty... return home safely.

I also agree with you, aich, YOU are the number one person responsible for your own safety. Therefore, don't start a public brawl with several others who will kick your ass. However, LE are not here to protect all people from all harm. They have no obligatory duty to protect you. Their number one duty is to protect themselves. Since they are here to serve the community, they will do so when they can.

Looks like the first responding officer handled it well imho.
He immediatly called for back-up and 'tried to' control the situation without risking unnecessary harm to himself until his back-up arrived.

The little bald dude who jumped into the mix after removing his little backpack made me lmao!
