Felt Naked Overseas on Vacation

Just got back from Costa Rica. Of coarse could not CC. Kept a assisted open knife handy but just didn't feel right. My constant level of alertness was elevated more so then when I CC in country. Just wondering if anyone else has felt vulnerable when unarmed. I guess I've become accustomed to having a firearm close at all times.

Ive never been out of the country but i did spend a little time in N.Y.C. once. ( thats sorta like another county aint it? ) and yeah i totally hated being unarmed. :fie: I had a small can of O.C. on me but it just wasnt the same as steel, plastic, and high speed lead.

Most definitely. Went to Game 5 of the Western Conference finals when my Stars were playing the Red Wings in Detroit, and because we had flown, we had NOTHING. And I was wearing my Stars jersey. We had to run for our lives once. Our hotel was a block from the People Mover (its an unmanned 2nd story monorail type train but it has two rails and travels in a circuit through the Joe, Greektown and the Greektown casino), and a bunch of gang looking thugs from across the street split up and charged us. We deposited our 50 cents and ran up the escalator but could hear them downstairs.

Fortunately the damn train arrived before they came upstairs and we got out of there, but it was scary.

While I collect knives, I don't know how to fight with one and my six months of Sho Ri Kenpo don't exactly comfort me like my 7 rounds of Federal 125 gr JHP 357 Magnum.

P.S. We won the game, with Turco getting the primary assist (they won the damn series, then the Cup), but I'll say this: Detroit fans have class. They come to my town, they buy me beers, and I shook the hand of every one that gave us crap that weekend.

It's not safe down there... We park at the parking structure for That Casino the ride the "train" (If you want to call that junk a train) to "THE JOE". I'd love to see a "Sidearm Check" at the coat check area so I would not feel so exposed.... The neighbor hood by the VA Hospital is MUCH Worse... Try going in there after dark...

Just in case you come back again for a game,,,,pick up an Octopus and throw that at the BGs...

FWIW, DD, I have flown several times recently wherein I checked my piece. Absolutely a non-issue, even flying into and out of the People's Republic of Maryland. If that was your only reason for having NOTHING, consider taking your "friend" with you the next time you fly.

L.O.L!! True. How did that rally go anyway Boomboy? How big was the crowd? The media seems to water those numbers down.

It was okay, but I met several folks from here, so I really, really enjoyed myself. Final count was 2000+, but we were all in agreement that one really big name speaker would have sent the numbers far higher. Maybe next year.

It was funny that most of the media coverage was of the rally that occurred over the Potomac in Virginia. They had about thirty visibly armed guys, and a pickup truck for a stage. Of course, I am all for their right to do what they did, I just wish that they had chosen a different day. Heck, if they had waited until Tuesday, I would have gone to their rally, as well.

I will let you guess which rally the main stream media chose to cover.

An observer said that the press outnumbered the rally participants about 2 to 1.

Ric, we didn't have a car and couldn't have parked anywhere, I only started thinking about going up to Detroit Friday for the game Saturday; it was all last minute, didn't know we had plane fare till Tim showed up at my house! And I'm a Star, I don't throw octopuses, besides, theirs would have been bigger than mine!

JJ, pack it, great idea, didn't even occur to me, all last minute you know. I still couldn't have packed in Detroit I don't think...

Great, now I've started a hijack - to the OP, yes I feel very uncomfortable when I'm unarmed, or only have a knife. Even at home, I'm never out of arms reach of a 357 or a 20ga. Learned that after getting my home robbed three times and later moving to a bad neighborhood (south Irving south of 183 Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex), where there were lots of cops, gang signs and drugs; learned to keep my stainless Rossi M88 standard pressure 5-shot 38 handy.
