Federal Range and Target/Winter Carry ammo type question

So is there really anything different about the whitebox Federal Range and Target FMJ ammo from other FMJ loads they have or are produced by other companies?

Secondly, opinions on Speer Gold Dot .40 S&W 180.gr. for wintertime carry (it is my current carry load)? Do you think it would still be sufficient given heavier clothing or should I swap out for FMJs (and if so, suggestions)?

This weekend I fired two 22lr round nose rounds out of my SR22 through a fifty pound pumpkin with two 3/4 inch boards behind it. Went through everything, from a self defense range of 10 feet. The hollow point rounds i fired went through the fifty pound pumpkin, but only made it through one of the 3/4 inch boards (after doing at least a 180 while inside the pumpkin, it went through the board backwards). I would trust either in a cold weather self defense situation.

That 180gr hollow point doing 900+fps won't be bothered by the extra layer of clothes enough for even the coroner to notice the difference if you, heaven forbid, end up having to use it.

This guy does excellent reviews. He usually fires through 4 layers of denim into ballistic gel. Most rounds seem to go through with ease.

I dont doubt my .40SW 180 grain JHP rounds will get the job done, but I think it is a good idea to carry FMJ when it is more likely your bad guy will be wearing multiple layers of clothes. Just personal preference.
