Friends,

Please take a look at the attached pic and tell me if the bullet on the left looks defective (the black ring of maybe sealant or something right around the hollow-point area).

The bullet on the right look good (same box) for comparison. I am very hesitant to trust my life to these brand new rounds that look defective. I know Federal is the best or close to the best factory ammo out there...but never seen this black stuff on bullets before.

Thank you

I'm guessing you were being sarcastic when you said federal is one off the best factory..... ?

Not at all. Except in this case obviously...well not 100% sure this box of ammo is defective but this is troublsome...I will be calling them at about 11:00am EST, since they are in MN which is MST (their 9am I believe).

Any reason not to believe they are not among the very best FACTORY ammo?

Unless you're talking about largest companies/manufacturers, or top 10.

I'd be more inclined to say Underwood, Hornady, Double tap, car-bon...and several others to be better.

Unless federal makes them under a didn't name then yeah... They're good.

Well, they're actually on CST (silly mistake on my part) so their "Product Service" line opened at 7:30am. I've been trying the number (1-800) 322-2342 and extension 2448 and they purposely have their system set up to ring a few times, then go to an automated system that says "sorry, blah blah blah" and it ends the call instead of being placed on hold to wait. I really don't appreciate that!!

Doesn't seem like a very good choice for defensive carry, with so many better choices out there. I would use those to punch targets. IMHO.

Exactly what I was thinking. You can see by the advertised stats that it's a pretty "weak" load:

Muzzle velocity: 1200 fps
Velocity at 50 yards: 324 fps
Muzzle energy: 432 ft/lbs
Energy at 50 yards: 324 ft/lbs
Uses: Personal Defense

Same weight, in Underwood that is a JHP instead of a Non-JHP

Technical Information

Caliber: 40 S&W
Bullet Weight: 135 Grains
Bullet Style: Nosler Jacketed Hollow Point
Case Type: Brass

Ballistics Information:

Muzzle Velocity: 1500 fps
Muzzle Energy: 675 ft. lbs.

The Underwood is a hotter (faster/stronger) and is a JHP plus it comes in a box of 50 that is same or less than a box of the 20 federals.

In all honestly, this isn't my preferred load...but unfortunately the Feds bought up so much ammo recently and this is all they had in my radius of 50 miles...I still love Federal but I trust Hornady equally. I'd much rather have the Federal HSTs in 180 grain (P40HST1) but haven't been able to locate any anywhere for about 12 months now.

Order some online... Just make it worth the shipping. I've found a single box will often cost same in shipping as 4 or 5 so make the order worth the 10 to 15 dollars shipping.
