FBI Background check for CWP

So as of today, SLED received my CWP application 97 days ago. I just called to check in on the status (hoping I would be told it had been issued), but was told they are waiting on the FBI's response to my BGC. I called on day 90 and got the exact same response.

Does anyone happen to know how long this part of the process actually takes? Not how long it should take (15 seconds or so from what I read), but how long it is ACTUALLY taking these days?

They take as long as they can get away with. My CWP in GA took just over the max time they say it should. I think this is either because they are against CCW, lazy, or both.

If a gun shop can determine it in 15 seconds for you to buy a gun, I don't see how that should take any longer...2 minutes at best, depending on how high their call volume is...

I'm hoping that I'm in the home stretch, though I was just told at my LGS yesterday that the wait is now 120 days or so. At this point an extra 3 weeks won't kill me, especially since I'll be carrying the rest of my life...but patience isn't one of my stronger virtues.

Not to beat up on the dead horse too much, but they must issue it 90 days after it is received.

No where in the code are they allowed to delay it indefinitely because they don't have their **** together, or the FBI is slow, or it's raining, or any other reason.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. But realistically I don't think there's much/anything I can do other than play the waiting game at this point. I nicely harass SLED every couple of days, but I'm at a bit of an impasse.

It took me 97 days from the date I mailed it until I actually received mine from SLED. S. 308 that is pending in the SC House is supposed to address the delay in some indirect way according to Rep. Garry Smith. My AZ permit came 6 weeks after I sent it off. By law, after 90 days, SC SLED MUST issue a CWP or notify you as to why you have been denied. If you are in SC, it will be a couple more days. Anywhere else...good luck!

I'm glad I don't live where you do.
My Wisconsin took 17 days and I had it.
My non-resident Arizona was less than a month.
You need to go down and slap those boys up.

SiVis,

By S.C. law SLED has 90 days from the date the application was received by SLED to issue your permit if everything is favorable. Since State employees do not work on holidays or weekends, you can "read into" the law (which does not stipulate)....this means "business days". Sooooooo....if you re-count the business days since your class(if your packet was handled in a timely manner) you will probably be more than a few days short of 90 business days. SLED does encourage you not to call because it slows them down. However, we ALL have waited.....and some have continued to wait....just try to be patient. If we can ever help, don't hesitate to contact us.

Rep. Garry Smith either doesn't know what he's talking about, or.... well lets stick with that. Neither S 308, nor any amendment offered (unless I missed one and I don't think I did) did anything to change the time frame SLED is given to issue permission slips. The only thing that is going to impact them is a change to the law, or someone taking them to court for not following the law.

If Mr. Smith is thinking that raising the price to $75 is going to make them work faster, he doesn't understand how bureaucrats work. Governments work faster when they are forced to work more efficiently, not when they are given incentives to not do so. SLED says it costs them $64 to process a permit application. The answer according to some politicians, is to give them $75. The answer should be, tell them to find a way to make it cost $25.

I could think of a damn good way to make it cost nothing for SLED to issue permits...

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people, pursuant to and in compliance with Article 4 of Chapter 31 of Title 23, to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

I hear ya! They definitely need to learn how to do MORE with less and increase efficiency. I'm not sure SLED is the "best" organization to conduct CWP processing. I say move it to the local Sheriff's offices and run them. Better yet, let's just pass S.115 and be done with it! Yeah, that ain't happenin'....

I think VA uses the Circuit Court to issue CWPs. That moves it out of LE control. CC should have a direct line to charges against someone and any mental rulings. Not sure how good or bad that is.

So I called SLED back today just to check, and was told that my CWP had been approved today. I'm not sure how long the approval --> printing --> mailing process takes, but I'm hoping to have it in my hand at some point this week.

Total wait for me (to approval, not to card in hand) is so far 103 days.
