favorite self defense ammo?

my favorite self defense is 147 grain federal law enforcement jhp (white box).:crazy_pilot::neo::nhl_checking:

Federal HST. I carry 9mm exclusively now, and my tools are loaded with 124gr (+P). I've transitioned from it, but my 45ACP used to get fed a 230gr (+P) diet. Still have two 50rd boxes of this in the safe.

From what I've seen and read of all the major offerings (HST, Rangers, Gold Dots, Golden Sabers, Critical Defense/Duty), I'd need a good reason to switch from the HST loads.

However, availability is a problem (like everything else these days). I've considered going to another more readily available option (aka, in stock and ready to ship now), but decided instead to put some HST on backorder. My supplies should last for now.

Not to place a shameless plug, but there's a guy in youtube with great ballistics reviews for many of the major offerings, and he also has a video on his chosen EDC ammo, which is also very good. His youtube ID is tnoutdoors9.

I went with Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr. I based my decision on believing most anything would probably do close quarters so looking over suggestions on YouTube without running my own gel tests and such would be good enough for me.

The thing that struck me about Critical Defense was the intentional design to penetrate layers of clothing without clogging the hollow point (it's kind of pre-clogged). In addition, the reviews indicated the depth of penetration, even at close range, would make it less likely the bullet would pass through a body and do collateral damage.

Now I have no clue if either of those are important considerations or if Critical Defense bullets really show these characteristics. I still kind of feel that most any quality bullet at close, self defense ranges will do the trick.

I also keep a larger stock of cheaper FMJ around for the range. I may empty a magazine of Critical Defense but that's just to slowly rotate stock. The range gets the cheapest bullets I can find at the time.

I use whatever shoots the straightest and is 100% reliable out of the gun in question. What brand it is doesn't matter to me. It's just got to be reliable and accurate.

Lets see....
In my .380 its Critical Defense.
In my 9mm its 124+p Golden Saber.
In my .40 S&W its either 180grn Gold Dot or 165grn PDX-1.
In my .45 its either 185grn +p Buffelo Bore or 230grn PDX-1.
There are other choices as well but to list them all would take too long... ;)

Sent from behind enemy lines.

Brands aren't that important to me, since there are so many good brands of ammo available nowadays.
.38 and .357 any good 158 gr. HP or SP
9mm any good 147 gr. HP
.40 any good 180 gr. HP
.45 any good 230 gr. FMJ or HP, either will get the job done in 230 gr. .45

My Glock 22 always has Speer Gold Dot 180gr because that is our Sheriff's Office policy. Every other gun I own will always have Hornady Critical Duty if available for the caliber, otherwise it will be Hornady Critical Defense.

May I ask what your draw is to the Critical Duty? I've been seriously considering buying a stock of this stuff for my 9mm family. Definitely opinions on both sides of the fence, including a fairly well-known ballistics expert saying it's nothing special, and not a first choice in his book.

Well my reasoning is quite simple. Hornady is top notch ammo in my opinion, so there's my draw to the name brand. The price between Critical Duty and Critical Defense where I'm at is virtually the same. So the Duty comes in a cooler looking box and the name just sounds cooler too, so there ya go lol

To those selecting anything that shoots: It is important what happens at the other end of the fight. Disable/not disable is influenced by the bullet. Some are notably better than others.
