Fantastic Chief of Police

Open carried while speaking at the local City Council Meeting last week. Chief of Police sat directly behind me during the meeting. Not a word was said by him about my gun. Met him after the meeting for a friendly introduction. Then we met in his office later in the week to discuss gun control issues. His office is in the secure part of a police station, so carrying is prohibited by state law, but he didn't even ask if I was concealed carrying (which I was not). We had a great discussion. He is one of the most knowledgeable men regarding my state's Constitution and firearms laws. He is trying to get the City Council to amend city code to comply with state law.

Chief Ed Green of Oak Harbor, WA is the finest law enforcement officer I have had the pleasure of interacting with.

I also live in Washington and have heard some good comments about Chief Green and his policies. Thanks for sharing NavyLCDR!

It seems the Mayor is also pro 2A. Watch this council meeting where a member walks out because of a concealed carrying veteran. The Mayor makes an awesome speech afterward.

Scary part is that 2 of the 7 were for this (illegal) motion, hopefully their citizens will correct that problem in their next election.

I got the impression that the other councilman only seconded the motion to get past the awkward silence hanging in the air and then only voted the way he did because of having hung the second out there.

I didn't get that sense, why would he second, and further vote for, something which was ridiculous and which he did not agree with? I would have much rather they all just stared awkwardly at the guy waiting for a second until he got up and left!

I didn't say I agreed with him or that he was right. Just said that was the impression I got -- which indicates to me that he's an easily swayed wishy, washy politician.

The other council member who seconded the motion, Joel Servatius, is very anti-gun. When the city council voted to NOT amend the city code in December (which currently contains repealed and illegal language which ban firearms in city parks), Joel Servatius said that he was voting against obeying state law because it did not make common sense to him, nor would he be comfortable with people carrying firearms in parks. Basically, I don't feel comfortable with that law, so I will not obey it.

The BIG city council meeting is tonight, where the city parks code is going to be addressed again. It will be very interesting to see what happens. Unfortunately, I am out of the state on military orders :-(

I saw that video and I thought that guy was a wuss for walking out of the meeting like that, he was pretty much saying "hey I'm going to make my point by being a coward."

Municipal laws are for regulating things like garbage and pet registration. No city should be allowed to have felony level laws or anything beyond a minor misdemeanor. I heard somewhere Seattle tried the same thing but couldn't due to state law. I guess Oak Harbor thought it was enough under the wire for this not to get challenged. Fortunately your state has laws that limit the power of city governments, as does my state (Ohio). Columbus tried to ban "assault" weapons a few years ago but the state struck it down.

I've been wanting to move to that area of the country for some time now and this is all the more reason to go there. Now if only I can find a job out there.
