Extra mags really

1. Mag failure.
2. Clearing a jam.
3. Accidentally hit the mag release.
4. Multiple assailients.
.

Why I prefer a BUG. Number 4 is nice I suspect if you have a spouse, friend etc that is trained to be able to hand them your BUG....I get your point and we are on the same page mostly I suspect , stuff happens

Lets hear it for the "what ifs". How about a double "what if"--- malfunction and a hoard of zombies. How about a triple 'what if"--a malfunction, a hoard of zombies and another malfunction in the middle of the fire fight.

In that scenario, I would already have my Sword out and swinging!!

What if they both do?!

Then you obviously have very, very bad luck. You know the odds of both mags failing are very low. When I carry my XD9 I carry one spare mag most of the time. I use a Bianchi two mag pouch and usually carry my light in the second pouch. If I'm hiking for instance I carry 2 mags. Most days I carry a LCR .38 with one speed strip in my pants and one more in my vehicle.

Ok why not ten magazines then? If two is good, ten must be great then!

Bottom line, each person makes their own threat assessment and makes their own evaluation of what is required to be prepared.

I carry an extra mag. What's the big deal? It's small and light enough and if I don't need it it won't hurt me.

I really like Stan45's analogy with the spare tire - why not carry four spare tires instead of one? If I had the space to carry ten magazines without looking like a fool or being burdened carrying a pack I would, but it's not practical.

Then again, Treo's post was a Highlander quote in regards to CharlesMorrison's post about using a sword.

When I was in the military and we did parachute jumps, I always had a reserve chute.
And one time I needed it. Sure was glad I had it.

I have 16 rounds to stop a threat. Do I really need to carry more? My plan was always to stop the threat long enough to get away and call the police. I'm a scaredy cat, ok. Staying and dying is not my first choice.

If your mag jams and you need to eject and replace it, then yes, you need several backup mags -- at least one.

Exactly. That why two of everything is a good general rule for anything that your life depends on.

It all depends on how many indians there are. Youre from Okalahoma so you should know all about being surrounded by indians.

Agree, and will add that each person's decision will be arbitrary and with no correlation to an unpredictable event. Only in hindsight will one know what was necessary and, fortunately, very few get that perspective.

It's a call we all have to make. I almost never carry a spare mag on me, but I do have a spare mag and a speedloader for my revolver in the door of both of my vehicles. I have slipped one in my pocket a time or two when in a known bad part of town, but for the most part, it is just me and my 11 + 1 40 S&W. When I have my revolver, I only have 7 shots. No way to know for sure if it is enough until after the fact.
