Well, I grew up around guns (I owned 5 by the time I was 13) and will always have a safe full of them, but I was prompted to buy a defensive handgun while camping. My group of buddies was interrupted in the middle of the night by a bunch of drunk rednecks who thought it would be fun to fire off hundreds of rounds through their AK's and their handguns at 1am in the middle of nowhere. We tried to call the police but there is zero service in Hells Canyon, so we began packing up our camp to move to a safer location for the night. While packing, the drunks came over to our campsite (adjacent to theirs, and the only two sites in that area), guns drawn (one guy had his 6" revolver cocked and his finger in the trigger, and a beer in his other hand). I had my Remington 870 loaded with slugs sitting on the ground right next to me, but I didn't reach for it because I wouldn't be able to get it fast enough to get a shot off before he (the drunk) would. So we played nice, extra nice, and tried to get on their good side, but they were pissed because we were camped where they wanted to put their boat. So after an interesting and stressful conversation, they walked back to their site and we got the HELL OUT OF THERE. Slept with that shotgun in my hands all that night in my tent.
That happened when I was only 16. We were just kids, and even though we managed to talk our way out of the danger, we were cornered and had no way of reaching police. It was then I decided that I wanted to be able to have a weapon 'at-hand' where I could draw quickly if I needed too.
And for those who think that 16 years olds are incompetent with firearms, I could shoot a better than my dad when I was 10, fired my first 30-06 when I was 5. Education of and respect for firearms has made me a lifetime gun owner.
That's SOME of my story.
