Every 12 seconds in America there’s a home envision

According to the FBI, every 12 seconds in America there’s a home envision that takes place, so what are all of you doing to keep your family safe? It’s easy to think, Oh that won’t happen to me and for the most part that’s true, but just in case, do you want to jeopardize the safety of yourself and family hoping that it won’t happen. Don’t be paranoid, just be mindful that it could happen to you and take precautions to protect what’s important to you, that’s all.

No street is safe. Fence, dogs, bars on windows, low profile, keep doors locked, keep garage doors closed, keep strangers out of your house. Good lighting, keep bushes ad scrubs away from house.

Beyond that, train, keep police grade equipment close, and hope for the best.

Someone is murdered about every 60 seconds, 437,000 murdered in 2012 world wide. Kidnapping capitol is Phoenix Arizona, and in Chicago, a weekend can see 12 murders. The world is a blender, running on high speed.

Home invasions occur 5.4 times more often than house fires. According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) one structure fire was reported every 65 seconds in 2013. Yet no one is complaining about home owners having smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

A gun rights organization (NRA, GOA, 2A Foundation, etc) and their PR staff needs to take these statistics and twist it back on the anti's

Awareness, avoidance and deterrence... good PPITH starts with the premises.
.
I layered the perimeter of the property. Alarm signs on the mailbox and the edge of the woods on all sides. Motion lights (10) around the house and barn. Motion-activated video cameras (6) trigger at about 30 feet. The DVR holds about 400 hours of video. The brush is cut back from lower windows. Alarm stickers on every door and window. Security doors at four entrances and a barred front door. Premises are alarmed for entry, glass breakage, motion, smoke, heat and carbon monoxide sensors. The dogs sound-off long before any of that gets breached.
.
Inside the home:
.
Setup a safe room or more than one if there are kids and multiple levels in the home. Each safe room should have a strong door. You can strengthen your door by replacing the hinge and strike plate screws with four-inch screws, right into the house framing (entry doors as well). Home Depot sells an adjustable door bar from "Master Lock" that wedges under the door knob... sort of like a big kick-stand bracing the door. Keep it behind the safe-room door. The safe room should have a means of escape (window). A safe room (other than kids) should have access to a weapon. I prefer a small gunvault screwed into the floor of each safe room's closet. If the house is alarmed there should be a control panel in the safe room.
.
The drill:
.
Each family member should know the drill. Upon the first sound of forced entry they should move to the closest safe room and lock-in. As soon as the door is secured get the weapon and call 911. Stay in that room and on the phone with 911. DO NOT CONFRONT THE INVADER unless he's trying to gain access to your locked room or if another family member is in trouble. Keep the 911 line open so they record the incident; if you need to shoot it's all caught on the recording. Stay in until police instruct you to come-out. Don't come out with a gun drawn and pointed... just holster or pocket it.

Dogs, Lights, cameras. Live out of the main suburbs on a small street with limited access. On a first name basis with almost everyone on the street. Low bushes, fences, and keep things locked up and out of sight. Never take the same way home twice in a row.
