embarrassed and relieved

So I have been trying to decide whether or not to share this experience...

I stopped at the County Clerks office last week to add a handgun to my license. Their office is in the court house, a secured area, so when I got out of my vehicle I gave myself a pat down to make sure I was ready to enter. No gun. No knife. No other knife. No camera. Got my keys. Got my paperwork. Got my wallet. Good to go.

I wander in, and empty my pockets into the dish to be screened. When I walked through the metal detector, it beeped. No suprise, my belt buckle will do that everytime. As I am getting wanded, I hear it beep near my left kidney. It is that point when I puckered hard and started sweating.

I immediatelly apolagized and told the deputy that I had forgotten to remove my spare magazine and that I would return it to my vehicle if he pleased.... However, I was pretty sure I was in a bit of trouble.

Pleasantly suprised, he told me not to worry about it and that they would write me a receipt and I could pick it up when leaving the building. Whew!

As I picked up my mag on the way out, he casually asked me what agency I was with. It was his turn to look suprised when I told him I am just an ordinary guy. I thanked him, apolagized again, and scooted out of there before he could say a thing.

All is well that ends well, I guess.

I'm glad you got away with no hassles, but I bet the pucker factor was in high gear...lol

I suspect if he HADN'T thought you were LEO of some sort, the magazine might just have become a big deal! Congrats.......I've had the same thing, actually, happen to me at the Federal Building here in town. They let me use a locker that's in place for LEO's to deposit their service weapons. No harm, no foul.

It's good to know that you weren't hassled over it. However, I have to ask if it is specifically against the law for you to do that (my guess is that in the PRNY, it probably is, although, since you have a license, maybe not). In either event, however, good job keeping your composure.

Tatted', I am not sure whether or not I was in any legal danger. However, my experience in nys with law enforcement (prior to carrying a handgun) has made me weary. I am glad that they treated me with respect and dignity and professionalism, even if only because they may have "thought" I was one of them as Pascal suggests.

Thank you for not stringing me up for being human and forgetting something.

Funny how things work even in the same state. Washington bans carry in court houses, cop shops, county buildings etc. but requires that the city/county provide a lock box for weapons. Local hick town court house has no metal detectors knives are not considered weapons. You go to the LEO desk get a key for your gun go back out front lock your gun up. Tacoma everything is a weapon, they have no lock boxes even though they are required to by state law. They expect you to leave your gun in the car. I love going to their metal detectors stopping before going through playing dumb and ask where do I store my gun. They invariably freak. I remind then they are required by state law to have a lock box and that they are responsible for my gun while it is in their custody. By than the alarm has gone out. I AM ALWAYS soft spoken and polite they get it straightened out I've had as many as eight LEO escort me to the LEO lock box never have drawn down on me but hands on their guns as they walk me to through the court house packing, down into the depths of the PD dept. It has been a few years since I have been there. Bet they still intimidate most weapons carriers to leave their guns in the car. Might be time to check on my moms property taxes or something

Would be funny to go through all of that and when you get to the lock box area they watch as you pull out your 2 shot .45 Colt "Derringer" type firearm.

I was thinking the opposite route pack in four or five guns and as many knives. Maybe add an asp and pepper spray. In the one traffic stop where the officer disarmed me he went on a rant because I had three knives on me

Embarassed...

Once, my mother was flying into Phoenix to visit and I drove from my home in Coolidge, AZ to meet her at Sky Harbor. This was before the 9/11 and the tightening of security, when each airline handled it's own security. I parked in the parking lot and put my Dan Wesson in the trunk along with my handcuffs. When I got to the security station, I found I had inadvertantly carried a speedloader in a jacket pocket. I showed my badge to the security screener, and he held the speedloader until I came back from the gate with my mother in tow. Red-faced, I went with her to baggage pickup then went and got the car to pick her up at the curb. We laughed almost all the way from Phoenix to Coolidge about my faux pas.

OMG...

Around 7 or 8 years ago, I was carrying and I've been doing so for many many years and I absentmindly walked into a federal building here in Virginia carrying a .40 S&W strapped to my hip. I walked through the metal detector and it wasn't 2 seconds before they were yelling GUN GUN GUN!!!! I was tackled and did not resist.

At this point, I was sure I was going directly to jail... and to be honest, it was not intentional, I had just forgotten because I have carried for so long.

To my surprise when I explained my situation, I was allowed after some background checks to return my gun to my vehicle, and then return inside...

Thank God for the coolness of U.S. Marshalls, and for them being "people" instead of machines, and they made my day!

MP3:

Better you than me.
Better there than here.

If it had been me and here, I might still have a mark in my ear from a deputies muzzle being screwed in so far. They were cool, calm and collected, but I expect any more than my magazine and I would have had a really, really bad day.

I've pulled stunts like that a couple of times.

Back in '96 I was flying home for Christmas from NNPTC in Orlando. I had bought my dad a big Buck Nighthawk Knife, and had already wrapped it up and everything, but I had forgotten to put it in my checked bag! So when they screened my carry-on, here's this bigass knife in there. Security came out and unwrapped my dad's christmas gift, opened the box, pulled out the knife, and ... let me go! I was only 19 at the time, and a dumbass E-3, and I guess they figured if I was going to try anything, I would have at least tried to hide the thing... just glad I didn't do that AFTER 9-11....

And a couple of months ago I went to the courthouse to pay a parking ticket. Forgot to take my big Spyderco out of my pocket. Nobody went nuts, I just had to take it back out to my car (dunno why I parked three blocks away, like an idiot).
