Effect of Government shutdown on permit renewal?

Hi folks,

Assuming the government shuts down on March 4 (99% chance in my view) it may be a protracted affair and only "emergency" government functions will be up and running.

I stupidly renewed my Florida carry permit with only 5 weeks to go on Feb 14. Under normal circumstances it is somewhat doubtful I will receive the new permit in time when mine expires on March 20.

But given a federal shutdown on March 4, I am wondering what role that will play. Doesn't renewal of a carry permit include an FBI check? In that case I don't think that function will be funded and I will be s*** out of luck until the federal shutdown is over.

Does anybody have any insight into what checks are carried out by states to renew a carry permit?

TIA

The Federal Government can't anymore "shut down" than a supertanker can "skid to a sudden halt". I think everything will run on as if it never happened.

Thanks I wish that were true but in the 1995-1996 shutdown everything did indeed grind to halt except emergency services.

I don't think the government would want a shut. The people might find out how much better their life would be without government intrusion. Good for the people bad for the government and government employees.:pleasantry:

Well, here is the way I look at it. At least if they shut down, they can't screw anything else up!

I didn't notice much change in 95/96. I was dog tired from working 3000+ hours on the job in 1994 and ended up having surgery in 1996.

When the government shuts down (as in 96) all "non-essential" services are suspended. There is some leeway there as the executive branch can determine whats essential. But last time around pretty much everything closed except for truly essential service like air traffic control.

I was hoping maybe somebody on the board knows if states depend on federal services to renew an existing permit, or they just rubber stamp it after checking the state database.

I don't know for sure but in MI. my renwal just went back to the gun board. It took less time than my buddies permit (he was putting in for the first time). Good luck though.

Iits been my experience that background checks for permits are done electronically through existing records. There isn't someone out "pounding the pavement" asking your friends and neighbors what kind of person you are. Now if you were applying for a Top Secret clearance, the story would be different.

There shouldn't be much, if any impact to your renewal.

I wouldn't bet the farm on it shutting down. After listening to the TV talk shows this morning, I'd say the chance is considerably less than 99%. Republican leaders will cave, IMO. I got the sense the cooler heads in the party don't want a government closure albatross around their necks as they start gearing up for the 2012 elections...and are going to do whatever it takes to avoid it.

Besides, that House-passed ~15% spending cut has zero chance of surviving in the Senate anyway so they have lots of wiggle room to find some common ground to keep the government office lights on. Or pass another continuing resolution. Either way, I'm betting we won't see a closure.

There'll be a lot of wheeling and dealing this coming week with the Senate out of session. And then not much time left until the 4th so this one will go right down to the wire. Prediction: The 4th will pass without a budget agreement but they'll settle that weekend and all offices will open as usual Monday morning, 7 March. These guys are quite cognizant of the news cycle deadlines and will milk this situation for every advantage possible short of alienating the voters.

Excellent point! One can only hope the Gov't shuts down. They won't be able to do more damage to our quality of life and pocketbooks!

Even if non-essential fed. gov't offices were to shutdown, (which I don't think are going to happen,) this should not include background checks. I'd expect fed. background check would be the only thing needed at the fed. level potentially impacting CC permits. Every other agency processing your permit is at the state level, right? It's a state permit to carry afterall.

In reality would we really notice a shutdown? I did not in the 90's.

Let's prioritize . . . The NFL could shut down around the same date.

Now that's really pushing it. But we could always hope that den of theives will move.

Lets send all those UN diplomats on an unescorted cruise off Somalia. But in answer to the question about the permit renewal it shoudnt be a problem.

Why unescorted.... I'm sure Mayor Bllomberg and his pals would be more than happy to protect them with their feather dusters.... :pleasantry:
