I've been "prepping" for about a year, for what, IDK... anything I suppose. My wife and I decided it made sense to become more self sufficiant anyway. Y'know, learn how to preserve food, garden, we already knew how to hunt & fish, and we 'd like to own livestock too. We'd like to be able to live at least halfway comfortable in a grid-down scenario.
As it's been said, we're also prepparing for the possibility of defending our "preps" from people who didn't prepare. I'm teaching my wife, and friends how to safely operate various firearms along with some simple "tactical" drills I've learned.
I'm spit-balling here but, I think the chances of a complete collapse(effecting everyone badly) might be around 5-10% over the next 5-10 years. I think the chances of another "depression" might be around 50%, where you'll have some people having a really rough time... and others not so much. Depending on where you live, I think being the biggest factor there.
It does provide a little piece of mind knowing we have provisions to survive comfortably for a realtively short period of time, couple of months... maybe six, if the "grid" ever went down. As well as if hyperinflation makes it very difficult to purchase your everday items, we'll have a good stock on hand.
But nothing crazy though, I'm not going to become a Nat-Geo Prepper, lol. We're still going to enjoy life to the fullest with all the modern luxuries we have. To deny them seems a bit foolish to us, and a bit of a premature punshment in a way, lol.
Hope for the best, plan for the worst.
