Dry Fire Practice?

I was watching a Personal Defense TV show that I had on my DVR and they gave a few drills that involved dry firing your handgun.

I have a Ruger SR9 and know that I can dry fire it with the magazine in place (without the magazine dry firing can damage the striker.) But will extensive dry fire practice hurt the gun?

I'd like to take a small section of my basement and set it up for a drill of drawing from concealed and dry firing. I'd also like to work on my trigger pull with dry fire practice. But I'm afraid that these drills will cause damage to my gun--even with an empty magazine in it.

Can anyone tell me if this would be an issue? Of course I will clear the gun and triple check to make sure it's clear. I will also make sure the area in my basement is a safe area to practice this in--if it won't hurt the gun!

You can practice with Snap Caps which are made exactly like normal rounds except they have no powder, are solid red, and where the primer would be there is a rubber that softens the pin blow.

You have a 9mm?

Yes I have a 9mm.

I guess you would load the magazine with the snap caps, rack after each dry fire, then reload after the magazine is empty?

With a modern striker fired handgun you can dry fire without worry. Don't even need the mag unless there is a mag safety. Dry fire "breakage" is largely a myth. SOME revolvers and SOME rimfires could be damaged.... drop your mags and dry fire away, Snap Caps are for malfunction practice.
