As a retired Army food inspector and current civilian Army Food Safety and Quality Assurance Specialist, I want to know what you are getting during your drills that is supposedly unhealthy. The military already buys lean meat. The only way to get leaner would be to purchase cutter/canner beef. If you are complaining about MREs then tough. There is no way to make them as palatable as restaurant or home cooked food. They are healthy though and far better than when I enlisted.
As for not being able to go off base and get your own food there is a reason. It's called zoonotic diseases. There are parasites and diseases that are endemic in the livestock population that don't cook out. Do you want a liver cyst the size of a baseball full of baby liver flukes? Do you want TB or brucelosis because you ate their unpastuerized cheese? If you are wanting children you don't want to get brucelosis as it can cause miscarriages plus you can spread that one like a STD. They fertilize their fruits and vegetables with night soils. Do you want any number of diseases transferred through human fecal matter? There is a reason their life expectancy is so low and so many kids die even without the hazards of war.
So, the Army is looking out for your best interest, and theirs, by not letting you do everything you want to do.

Tony
