I haven't seen any Dollar Generals in our area that are posted as gun free zones for the public, but the employee manual prohibits DG employees from carrying ANY defensive device with them while at work.

The following are NOT a complete list but are illustrative of those offenses for which even the first offense may leadto performance counseling and/or termination from the Company: ....

  • Possession of a weapon (examples include: gun, knife, stun gun, mace, pepper spray and other weapons) on
Company owned or leased property or at Company sponsored events, unless otherwise required by law

When did pepper spray become a weapon?!

Despite being robbed numerous times each year and having several employees killed during robberies, Dollar General prefers that their employees be good and defenseless.

When I worked at Advance Auto, the boss insisted that I would be fired on the spot if caught carrying. A co-worker suggested I read the employee manual, always a good but often overlooked idea. It said, in relation to weapons carry, that it was prohibited "except where allowed by state or local law." In Delaware, open carry is legal except where posted on private property. The store was not posted, and many customers came in OC with nothing said. I wish now that I had given the boss and me a chance to find out what would have happened. Had to leave due to a run-in with a table saw. Now with my permit(s) I CC all the time including at home.

The part I found more disgusting than not being able to carry is that the handbook said that a condition of employment is that the employee consents to searches of the employee and personal lockers at random. Screw that, you want to search me at my job, get a warrant.

That searching crap cost me a job once, but it did not pay very well so it was no great loss, in this case it was over something stupid, the owner told the GM to search all the employees personal computors, someone was downloading movies from the companys websight, and he thought it had to be one of us, it was not, and after some time and a little investigation, the problem was found to be customers while in the waiting room were getting on and downloading stuff, and somehow it was charged to the company, like I said no big deal I got a better job

Is it me, or am I the only one that is wondering why, Rocket, that you lost your job when you didn't do anything?

Lol...wolf_fire, I think rocketgeezer meant he didn't want to work there any longer. It seems to me like a messed up situation.

It is truly messed up when a company would rather send a "we regret to inform you" message to the family members than let their employees DEFEND THEMSELVES - and this is a company that has lost a number of employees to armed attackers.

I live less than two miles from a "mom & pop" store and a dollar general.
BOTH places robbed, multiple times. With weapons (gun & knife!).
The bank my Wife and I use was robbed by an individual who passed a note threatening to shoot if he didn't get the money! That was less than a mile from me too!
That one I followed on my scanner at the time.
Funny thing though.... All the Cops agencies involved have since switched to trunk systems and refuse to disclose the frequencies to follow them.....
Hmmm...

They do that, like other companies, because if a dozen employees get mowed-down, the company wins. How? They collect lots of flowers outside, sympathy, more business as the free advertisement hits the airwaves (yes, they get mentioned dozens of times, including their address, for free). On the other side, one dead robber, killed by an employee, makes the place seem dangerous. And heaven forbid the employee is white while the attempted murderer is black!

Employees are expendable. We are pawns. We only exist (as far as the Corporation is concerned) to create more money. With unemployment near 30%, the Corporation knows replacing you will be super-easy.

If employees live - that's a win.
If employees die - that's a win.

While I detest unions, only united workers can force businesses to recognize the right of the employee to live. It seems very simple: The employee wants to live. When an inhuman beast such as a Corporation runs so many peoples' lives, our nation is truly in trouble.

If anyone knows of any solutions, besides trying to unionize, please post a follow-up. I'm all ears (eyes).

Unionizing doesn't help you. And companies aren't picking an anti-violence policy based on sales or exposure. Just crazy to think so. Simply put... insurance rates are lower with these policies in effect. When completing a general liability or D&O policy application the question are quite thorough in this area.

I'd like to know from someone in the insurance business if having this policy makes a big difference, and what the difference is. Even then, isn't it all still about money?

it IS all about money. like stated, insurance rates are lower for them, plus if something happens they have that policy in place to slough any litigation onto the employee for breaking their rule.

The difference in premiums was substantial. And yes, its all about money. I'm not in the humanitarian business or to support others' positions on the constitution. That's between you an your government.
