How do you tell if a politition is telling a lie? If his lips are moving. Those that would vote for him care not that hie lies as long as he gives them what they want.

"The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of "liberalism" they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened." Norman Thomas, for many years U.S. Socialist Presidential candidate

That's a bogus quote. http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/socialism.asp

Both the Republicans and Democrats have borrowed ideas from the Socialist Party platform. One example is Social Security.

Actually a lot of what snops says is bogus.
In this case, Snoops is correct. The quote you used is bogus.

Here are some of the reforms advocated by the Socialists that are now American institutions.

Government relief of the unemployed

A legal work day of not more than eight hours.

A system of Social Security.

Government employment bureaus.

Conservation of human resources.

A rest period, for every worker, of not less than a day and a half in each week.

Regulation of workshops, factories and mines.

Freedom of press, speech and assemblage.

A graduated income tax.

Inheritance taxes.

Unrestricted and equal suffrage for men and women.

Initiative, referendum and recall.

Democratic government in all United States territories.

Measures for the conservation of health.

Creation of a Department of Health.

Bureau of Education to be made a department.

Separation of the Bureau of Labor from the Department of Commerce

Conservation and development of natural resources for the use and benefit of all the people.

This just illustrates the quote. America wouldn't adopt ANY of the concepts in bold if they had been presented as a Socialist package-deal, but by presenting them individually and under the guise of "what's best for us", all this has become part and parcel of daily life. The other items are integral to the Constitution or Bill of Rights and merely needed to be clarification to reverse traditional practices, such as equal suffrage, and initiative, referendum & recall.

Communist/Socialist and they no longer had an alternate party platform
on which to run.]

So I guess we the American people have to stop this "one day" from happening.

NO_vember will be here soon. Time to focus the anger into something positive. Out with the liberals...

I agree. However, those who favored the "Industrial" and "Political" demands of the Socialists were an overwhelming majority and possessed the intelligence to understand that a complex industrialized secular democratic republic didn't have to adopt the "Collective Ownership" demands of the Socialists in order to provide relief of the unemployed, establish a legal work day of eight hours, establish employment bureaus, provide for the conservation of human resources, establish for every worker a rest period of not less than a day and a half in each week, establish effective inspections of workplaces, establish freedom of press and speech and assemblage, establish a graduated income tax and grant many of the other political demands of the Socialist Party which are now great American institutions.

That's a bogus quote.

they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program
History proves that statement is false.

Americans have adopted many, if not most, of the Unemployment, Industrial and Political demands of the Socialists. However, they have rejected all of the Collective Ownership demands of the Socialist Party.

Collective Ownership Demands of the Socialist Party in Their 1912 Platform

1.) The collective ownership and democratic management of railroads, wire and wireless telegraphs and telephones, express service, steamboat lines, and all other social means of transportation and communication and of all large scale industries.

2.) The immediate acquirement by the municipalities, the states or the federal government of all grain elevators, stock yards, storage warehouses, and other distributing agencies, in order to reduce the present extortionate cost of living.

3.) The extension of the public domain to include mines, quarries, oil wells, forests and water power.

4.) The further conservation and development of natural resources for the use and benefit of all the people: . . .

5.) The collective ownership of land wherever practicable, and in cases where such ownership is impractical, the appropriation by taxation of the annual rental value of all the land held for speculation and exploitation.

6.) The collective ownership and democratic management of the banking and currency system.
