Doctors

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is

700,000.

(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians

per year are

120,000.

(C) Accidental deaths per physician
is

0.171

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of
Health and Human Services.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Now think about this:

Guns

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S.

is

80,000,000.

(Yes, that's 80 million)

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths

per year, all age groups,

is

1,500.

(C) The number of accidental deaths

per gun owner

is

.0000188

Statistics courtesy of FBI

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So, statistically, doctors are approximately

9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Therefore , 'Guns don't kill people, doctors do.'

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN,

BUT

Almost everyone has at least one doctor.
This means you are over 9,000 times more likely to be killed by a doctor as by a gun owner!!!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Please alert your friends

to this

alarming threat.

We must ban doctors

before this gets completely out of hand!!!!!

"The Truth:
This email is obviously the humorous creation of a gun enthusiast.

We don't know when it was written but not all of the statistics appear accurate.

According to the U.S. Department of Health Services there were about 780,000 licensed physicians in the United States in 2008, so that figure seems good.

Finding statistics that everybody agrees with regarding deaths caused by doctors is a little more difficult. Dr. J. Mercola released a book in 2000 titled Doctors are the Third Leading Cause of Death in the US, Causing 250,000 Deaths Every Year. His breakdown, however, largely focuses on errors in hospitals and includes 12,000 deaths by unnecessary surgery, 7,000 due to medication errors in hospitals, 20,000 due to other errors in hospitals, 80,000 from infections in hospitals, and 106,000 from the negative effects of medications.

Regarding gun owners, according to the National Rifle Association (NRA) 2010 Fact Sheet, they tallied in the U.S. between 70 and 80 million. The NRA fact sheet also said that there are close to 300 million privately owned firearms in the United States with hand guns counting for nearly 100 million and that somewhere between 40-45% of American households have firearms.

According to the National Rifle Association there were 776 accidental deaths from firearms in 2000, a lower figure than in the email.

That's all interesting to know but the premise of the email is weak and, as we said, mostly aimed toward humor. Comparing doctor deaths to accidental firearm deaths is meaningless, especially because doctors are dealing with people who are sick in the first place, some of whom are at high risk for death or have gone through high risk medical procedures. "

Doctors More Dangerous Than Gun Owners-Humorous Fiction!

May not be the most reliable...here is the article to the JAMA: Is US health really the best in the world? [JAMA. 2000] - PubMed - NCBI

That is probably a little more reliable.

Wait, I'm confused. I clearly read it, right here on the internet, and somebody said it was true. How can someone, also on the internet, state that it's not true? The internet is nothing but facts so how can these contradictory statements exist? I am feeling pressure building in the time/space continuum!

It was a government coverup perpetrated on 9/11.

A scam on the internet? Who would have thunk it? Just got my own, referred them to my photo, I love the internet. See attached: Hello,
I am a Murder Agent am from Spain but right now am in US i've no other job than to kill to survive...don't know the business transaction you had with one of your close friend.he payed me to kill you.i don't know what you did to him and i don't care to know..but the person wants you dead and right now your life is in my hands..you have just 48hours to live after that me and my men shall come for your life..my men are surrounding your house right now watching you and if you do anything stupid you shall receive a gun shot from us.. but i can help you if you will pay me double of what he payed me.........and i can also tell you who ordered us to kill you..but that will be after you have payed to save your life..your life is in your hands now.

Give me your mobile number where i can reach you so we can talk on phone.Do not inform the police because we are watching you

NB:DO not tell any of your friend this because you might be telling the person who paid me to kill you.....

Brian.

Actually, per a study done about 3 years ago by (as I recall) the Kellog Institute, there are a million or more deaths due to doctors or 'medical mistakes' in hospitals, every year.

Also, another survey I read about last year says there are now 140,000,00 gun owners in the U.S. So, the numbers are way off. I would suggest that doctors are more than 9000 times more likely to kill you - probably closer to 12,000 to 15,000 or more. Who wants to do the math? I'm tired.

Facts VS Humor

Snopes this Crap

This is one of those times where the overall veracity is trumped by the humor. Probably the numbers are close if not perfectly true. We do know that legal owners of firearms are responsible for a very small number of deaths. We also know that doctors have to spend a fortune in insurance to protect them against lawsuits from injuries either real or imagined, not to mention wrongful accidental deaths.

The story may be fiction, but from what I've read, doctors are responsible for MANY more deaths each year than 120,000. I've also a feeling that there are MANY more gun owners in the U.S. than quoted. Just my opinion.

So.. 12,000 deaths from un-necessary surgery, dividided by 780,000 doctors (Wonder how many are GPs, vs. surgeons?).. that's 1.5 %.

Regarding gun owners, according to the National Rifle Association (NRA) 2010 Fact Sheet, they tallied in the U.S. between 70 and 80 million. Let's be generous, and say there's only 70,000,000 gun owners.. and not the upper limit of 80m as the NRA suggests. If we divide the 776 accidental deaths by 70,000,000... that's
.00001108571428571429, or .001 %.

Actually, if you do the closest apples to apples comparison... it makes it even MORE so in favor of the "fact" (quoted for effect!) that doctors are more dangerous than gun owners... although to play devil's advocate, the accidental deaths value is from 2000, the gun ownership numbers are from 2010, the doctor count (which doesn't break down by surgeons, just doctors in general) is from 2000, and the accidental deaths value (which factors in only un-necessary surgeries, not other medical malpractice categories) was from 2000.. It's shaky at best, but still makes me think about the comparison as being more than merely 'novel'.

This is brought to us for what reason. I have to make this point like the kids. Figures don't lie but, liars do figure or figures lie and liars figure. Which ever version you want to use.

My DR had a 30.06 sign on his clinic door so I asked about it. He explained that being from the country, he grew up around guns and taught his kids to shoot. He has no problems with them but if he wants to get PAID BY THE HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES, he had to put that sign up.
Last appt, I left the 1911 in the car but kept the IWB since I didn't anticipate him requesting me to raise my shirt. However, he didn't say anything about the holster.
Next time I'll ax him if it would bother him if my holster was "filled". I'm sure he will allow it as long as I don't flaunt it.
