Doctors Violating Patient's Gun Privacy

I just read Luke's article about doctors in Florida asking patients questions about their ownership of firearms. That was the first time I ever heard of a doctor asking if the patient owned a weapon. To say that I would be indignant if asked such a question is an understatement. Ownership of a weapon is outside the parameters of his profession and not a matter I would care to discuss with him and definitely something I would not want entered in my medical records. This is going too far and is something that needs to be stopped immediately. They should remember they are doctors, not policemen. To go a step further, my wife went to the doctor yesterday for her annual appointment and, because she uses Medicare, she was given a test to determine if she was depressed. Just what in hell is going on in our society anymore? I think "Big Brother" needs to be reigned in and stay out of our business. My appointment with my doctor is next month and I can hardly wait to see what kind of questions he asks me. I may wind up having to find another doctor but he will be careful what he asks others! Is this happening in any other states?

A bill has passed the Oklahoma Senate which makes it a crime for a doctor to ask a patient if there are firearms in the home. It looks like it will pass into law this year.

They also passed a law which will prevent the Mayor Bloomberg group from trying to buy guns from FFL holders in Oklahoma by lying on the application. That one is a felony. I wish one would come to me after the law becomes law. Gotcha.

It's time that either the Feds charge him or turn over the gun control laws to the states. Either way, it would not hurt me to see Bloomberg do some hard time.

This has very little to do with the discussion here but I had a doctor's appointment yesterday. While sitting in the room waiting for the Dr. I overheard another Dr. talking out in the hall. Basically he was raising hell about the gun laws and how we now have to have zero tolerance in schools. Lets just say that he is pro-gun. I didn't get to talk to him and didn't hear any details of his discussion (eavesdropping is not nice) but one can't say that all doctors are liberal Brady Bunch supporters. :pleasantry:

Just to add nothing was said about anyone's health so no hippa laws were involved.

Pediatricians are instructed to ask your child if you have guns in the home while they are examining the child. I sit with my boy during his medical exams now.

You are right, not all doctors are anti gun. My doctor, the one that did surgery on me and my wife also is a very pro gun and a hunter. Another Doc in town is on the US Army Reserve Senior Pistol Team. I am sure there are some anti gun docs here, but they probably came from back East.

The current doctor I see has not askes me any gun related questions. How ever, I have new insurance with a different hospital group so I will be having to find a new one. I will continue my search if asked any gun questions, and will let that doctor and his office know why he won't be getting my business or my insurance companies money.
Is there a resource to find out if doctors in your area are allowed/requirwd to ask. And also to find out which ones if they do/have to? Is it Fed or State regs? Ins regs?

Our family's pediatrician is from the Phillipines and she mentioned one day she is not a fan of Obama, so I flat out asked her how she feels about gun control. Her husband has his CCW and she is all for it. Doesn't care if I carry in her office.

Wow Government health care at its best. Got to love all that hope and change. We need to pass more laws so we can see what is in them.:sarcastic:

What a load of ****! How in the hell does that have any bearing on anything?

Can anyone speculate what the purpose would be for doctors to discover this information?

Why would they need that?

It's for the safety of the children. The doctor needs to determine if the child is at risk because of their right wing extremist anti government parents. Expect a visit from the SS (Social Services).

Remember History?

With the implementation of Obamacare, we have no idea what doctors are required to find out about families now and, the scary part, we don't know who will receive the information. Going back in history, Germans were so indoctrinated that they would inform on each other to the Gestapo and other government agencies about their activities. What easier way to get information than to ask seemingly innocent questions of a child. They are not aware of any ulterior motives that may be used by caregivers. That information could easily be obtained at day care centers, etc. and reported to the "authorities." Given the government we now have, I believe anything could be possible. The anti-gun people would not hesitate to stoop that low if they could deprive us of our weapons. Don't ever think they will quit trying!

My son lived next door to a doc in Greeville, NC. The doc had a pistol range in his back yard. I often did a little target practice when I visited my son.

Some would actually try to turn you in to Child Protective Services. The doctor would claim that the child lives in a "dangerous setting."

I had the "guns in the home question" asked to me when my daughter was very ill and had to be admitted to the hospital. The nurse asked "do you keep guns in the home?" I replied "What do you think....?" She asked another question: "Are any loaded?" I replied: " Begging your pardon ma'am, this is really none of anybody's da@% business. My daughter is running a high fever and is severly dehydrated and this hospital is more concerned about firearms in my home."

I think there was a bill introduced in our state legislature this year prohibiting this question. However, I cannot find any records of it.

I was surprised to learn that my dermatologist is a FFL holder. My own personal doctor asked me for a class for his license. So there are some docs who are pro-gun. The AMA continues to preach anti-gun sentiments in their publications. I believe doctors read these and feel some responsibility for expressing their opinions. In most states a doctor is a mandated reporter. This requires him/her to report treating stab, burn or gunshot wounds to the police.

I am a physician and am VERY Pro Gun. As I have posted on other threads the medical and public health literature are replete with anti gun bias. It does not matter how many times Kallerman et al is refuted it always seems to be treated as gospel.

The official stated position of the American Acadamy of Pediatrics is that private ownership of firearms should be illegal (for the children)

The well child guidelines published by the AAP contain the questions referred to about firearms in the home and how they are stored. When I was in training to be a Family Physician anytime I worked with pediatricians I would have to ask similar questions or be graded down as performing an inadaquate interview and inadaquate "anticipatory guidance"

For those of you who reload at home. Even if the physician does not ask about firearms, your status as a gun owner could be recorded during the "anticipatory guidance" about lead levels in the home.

Being Pro gun, I was very disturbed by the implications of the questions and wouild always work something along the lines of "I respect your right to keep and bear arms" into my anticipatory guidance spiel. I would merely note "firearms safety discussed" in the medical record NEVER would I record if the patient's family had guns in the home. Since I asked the question at every well child visit it could not be used to determine the presence or absence of firearms in the patient's home.

Incidently I have also given presentations on firearms, firearms safety and safe storage in peer conferences. I have gotten to know several physicians who go shooting on a regular basis through these as well as introduced some of my collegues to more hands on firearms training.

If my PM Doc asked, it would be more likely a long conversation. We both read the same type of books and they do involve guns.

Actually, the new health care law has provisions in it that prohibit the collection of such information. They were put in there by none other than Harry Reid as a concession to gun owners when the democrats were doing all the wheeling and dealing trying to get health care passed. Shocker, huh?

Yep. This is their 'guidance' to physicians:

Oldgrunt is correct on so many fronts here... Obamacare will be more about information gathering, indoctrination, and social manipulation than healthcare. This is just another intrusion into our private lives by government and what is garnered will not be used to the benefit of the "patient". With todays technology, any info from any source will be collated to form a profile on every individual and the state will then deem how that person will fit and function (or not) in their "new world" society. We have entered a "post constitutional" era in the U.S. and for those of us who love freedom and individualism this will not be a happy land.
