Doc Saves The Day, With His Gun: Psychiatrist Shoots Down Patient Who Killed Co-Worker in Front of Him

Editor’s Note: Imagine if that doctor didn’t have his gun with him. There is no cop or security guard on the hospital’s premises who could have come to the docs rescue fast enough. This doctor saved many lives taking lethal action against this perpetrator.

A Pennsylvania doctor is being hailed a hero today after he seriously injured a patient who went on a shooting spree in his office.

Dr. Lee Silverman, a psychiatrist, told police that the patient, identified as Richard Plotts, fatally shot a caseworker at their hospital complex before the doctor pulled out his own gun and exchanged fire with him and wounded him, a prosecutor said Thursday night.

Silverman was grazed in the temple during the gunfight in his office, according to Delaware District Attorney Jack Whelan.

Yeadon Police Chief Donald Molineux said that ‘without a doubt, I believe the doctor saved lives.’

‘Without that firearm, this guy (the patient) could have went out in the hallway and just walked down the offices until he ran out of ammunition,’ the chief said.

Whelan identified the caseworker killed Thursday afternoon at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital as Theresa Hunt, 53.

Hunt, who was from Philadelphia, had accompanied Plotts to an appointment with Silverman at a psychiatric crisis center adjacent to the hospital in Darby, just southwest of Philadelphia, authorities said.

‘When the caseworker was shot, (Silverman) crouched down behind the desk to avoid him being shot,’ Whelan said.

‘He was able to reach for his weapon, and realizing it was a life or death situation, was able to engage the defendant in the exchange of gunfire.’

A struggle ensued and spilled out into the hallway, Whelan said. Another doctor and a caseworker jumped in to help Silverman and secure Plotts’ weapon, he said.

The motive for the shooting remained unclear late Thursday, although Whelan said Plotts, of Upper Darby, might have had issues with the doctor over his treatment plan.

However, it’s unclear if that’s why Silverman was armed, apparently against hospital policy.

‘We do believe that there were some issues between the doctor and the patient, but whether or not he actually feared him is unclear,’ the prosecutor said.

‘From all accounts, (he) would have acted in self-defense.’

It's funny...and then again, it's not...that none of the mainstream press reported the hero part of the story, only the "staff" that subdued the perp AFTER HE WAS SHOT by the doctor. Had he not shot, who knows how many people, including the doctor, would have been shot or killed. New York Times, Reuters, Fox--none of them report a hero doctor. I'm just sick and tired of it.

I sent a contact form to Mercy Health System suggesting that this incident is more evidence that armed citizens are desirable on your premises. Here's a link to their contact page:

I sent mercy health my 2 cents worth. I am also surprised at the positive responses from the police.

A regular reader and PA police officer just sent us this email re: the shooting and defensive gun use at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, PA:

Just cleared the crime scene.

I can not tell you the rage that myself and many of my fellow officers felt as we looked at the sign which prohibited weapons from the building. The mental patient did not seem to pay the sign any attention. And neither will anyone else who wishes to hurt people.

One moment of joy, in a day filled with sadness was when we learned, as we were closing in, that the doctor/victim had a firearm and defended himself and his staff,. you could probably hear about 30 officers, make statements along the lines of “Hell yea!”, “Good for him” and “the way it should to be!” from outside the building.

Thankfully the Doctor ignored the sign.

Crime scene guys are working it now, more facts I’m sure to be released in the press.

I just hope the armed doctor doesn't lose his job over this. The local Mercy (Centura Health) Hospital here also has a "No Firearms, Concealed Carry Prohibited" sign at all of its doors.

That was my first thought when I read the story. He'd be prosecuted here in Bama. No firearms allowed in any hospital facility, and no signs required. I don't like it, but it's the law and everyone who carries is supposed to know it.

I'd be kinda surprised if the doc in the OP didn't get fired if he flouted policy.

I'm not the least bit surprised when the media ignores or misrepresents a shooting where the ordinary citizen is the good guy that takes out the bad guy since we can't have anything that upsets the "guns are dangerous" anti gun narrative now can we?
